I've a WD5000AAVS drive which was ripped off the WD MyBook Home Ed.

HD Tune shows up the following status:

There're no bad sectors though!

I did run a quick warranty check on the drive using the serial no. and fortunately, its under warranty till June 2011.

Seems like WD has an RMA procedure specified at their website. There's a space provided for mentioning the reason (in not more than 30 letters!).

1. Would "High spin-up time" qualify for an RMA?

2. How should I go about with the RMA procedure? Someone who's already gone thru the hassles can guide me on the same.

TIA

It does not matter what you specify in the reason. You can enter "Test Failure" or "SMART Failure".

Generate the RMA #. Pack it. Print the pre-mailer and call up the toll free number and ask them for a pick up. Their courier guy will come and pick it up and the rest will be taken care off by WDC.

Thanx for the info Sumit. Much appreciated. :)

Would that be possible in Surat?

Or should I pack the drive and send it to the RMA centre?

For me in Shillong, there is no pickup from WDC. I have to send the drive on my own. I don't know about Surat.

^Guess its the same here. Shall fill up the online RMA procedure and let's see how it progresses. Thanx again Sumit.

PS: How long did it take for the drive to be replaced? What replacement did they offer? :P

They will only RMA if you have the External Casing :P

I have same drive , from broken case .. lotsa bad sectors , spin up time problem .:(

i RMA'ed a hdd last week itself. (250GB)

it took 3 working days for the replacement to come aftr the courier guy picked it frm my house....pretty fast....gr8 service...

got a 8MB cache hdd in return for a 2MB drive.

ur packing shud be according to their website...else it might be rejected....

I have one drive waiting to be shipped back to me. It was received by them on the 23rd.

On an earlier occasion, I had to wait 20 days for my replacement to arrive.

Nothing special or upgraded though. I received the same model/make.

is der nethin to worry...the hdd is 2 days old...

Even for me it took about 25 days for my 500 GB HDD replacement to arrive. :(

^Those were the earlier red/green/white boxes and very hard. :P
New yellow ones are sad- already soggy and weak by the time the pizza arrives. :(

@Gannu - sorry to bump this old old thread. I was keen to know what happened to this.
1. Did you send it and get a replacement for it?
2. Did you put it back in the original casing before sending?
3. Did you ever check the drive with the WD tool rather than HD tune? I am asking because I have a WD drive that shows S.M.A.R.T failure with the WD tool but fine with the Seagate tool.
4. I do not have a external drive myself so I ask whether the diagnostic reports like S.M.A.R.T work with external drives too? If not, WD may have a question about how you report such a failure for an external drive.
