Well, no other PC upgrade on mind for the occasion Thanksgiving, so thinking about investing in a pair of headphones.

Maximum budget is $40 but i don't mind cheaper if it's a better product.

want to buy something which would have a premium quality in terms of both design and performance (looks secondary)

Type: Circumaural, supra aural, full size and whatever with those foam thingies.

Purpose: Music, Movies, not really concerned about audio quality in games.

Connectivity: 3.5mm is preferable, or any that would come with a converter to 3.5mm, wireless is welcome incase it also supports a2dp over bt, otherwise wireless would be a useless feature for my usage.

would like to have a wide frequency response spectrum.

music taste ranges from ghajals from jagjit singh to screaming from dimmu borgir..although i would prefer clarity over the sheer volume level, bass is not a huge concern, good if it's strong but most of my audio taste does not demand very low base.

i want to place my order now preferably in order to take the advantages of any holiday offers that can serve my purpose.

will be buying from states via cousin and will be eligible for any sorts of rebates and discounts.

I saw a few good offers at TigerDirect.com and Buy.com

and i'm damn confused about which one to buy. :huh:

please help this headphone virgin :)

PS: i will be using them with PC, my onboard sound is ALC662 and it may not drive these headphones, on i'm also up for investing in an amp for headphones OR a low end sound card, i would be upgrading to ALC889 or something better though.

In terms of SQ the JVC's are really good (both the RX-700 and RX-900 ). Also the grado sr60i is one of the highly recommended cans on head-fi but is bit beyond your budget.

Ofcourse all of these would require a fairly decent source / sound card to give their best.

I would suggest read reviews of the mentioned cans on head-fi and then decide according to what suits you best :).

hey faheem i ve been raeding a lot of ya stuff..Good job dude.

Need some suggestion from ya side. one of my friends in US iscoming to India and I thot of getting a good set of headfones(IEM or OEM). How good are these.

Beats by Dr.Dre . Can u suggest a good set. Budget is 200$ tops.

JVC HARX700 looks impressive to me.

also, which would be the cheapest amp which would be able to drive it?

on the same issue, i have creative 5.1 (forgot the model number which has headphone jack in the remote controller, the sound via that compared to the one from mobo directly is much better..assuming the 5.1 system has it's own amp, would i still require an amp for these headphones?
 
Haven't heard the KOSS PRO 3AA, so can't give any personal feedback but going by the reviews and words of head-fi'ers they seem to have very high treble .. which means lot of detailing in the higher frequencies but then it can even cause fatigue with even short listening sessions ..

Overall I feel the JVC's are your best bet. They completely sit over the ears providing good isolation and the sound has punchy bass , the mids are also smooth and I really liked them when I heard it.

Regarding the sound card, I guess any decent card should be better than onboard .Can you specify which card do you have exactly ? I doubt it has a dedicated headphone amp like the XONAR STX.

but still the overall volume should be better than onboard.

Ive heard the JVCs on oboard as well as a XONAR STX, the difference was huge, They sounded amazing on the STX but even on on board they were decent and easily driven .

Get the RX700/900 I say .You can always invest in a dedicated DAC/ sound card later on .Tough you will have to spend quite a lot for that.
 
err no i dont have a sound card.

i mean, i have creative 5.1 speakers with headfones jack on remote controller which gives me better sound quality over ep630 compared what i get from front panel headfones header of my alc662.

i'll ask cousin if he can make a purchase of JVC HA-RX700 Stereo Headphone - HARX700 - Buy.com

they have some buy.com visa thingie with $30 instant rebate, which if works then i will be able to afford an amp or sound card right away..

will update this thread accordingly :)

got my ha-rx700 last month around valentine's day...

didnt even post in show off yet :P

bumping this up in order to get some perspective about what shall i use to drive it.

a portable amp OR better sound card?

my current sound source is onboard ALC662 and it is able to drive it.. even mp860 is able to drive it..although i have no reference to compare whether both are capable of driving it properly.

i would prefer a sound card as anyways i may not use this out doors with any portable audio device :P

but still considering E5 as it is affordable.

what options shall i consider in sound card?

i'm open to buying 2nd hand products from TE market..would also consider importing a sound card from states but i would avoid that if price difference is not much compared to local pricing.

so finally it comes down to whether E5(or other amp) OR sound card?

PS: my current speaker system is creative inspire M5200 (5.1)...it is not the brightest and i may also say that i barely use it.

would surely consider getting a better system for HTPC setup 8-12months down the road so im not looking forward in investing a lot in sound card at the moment.

im totally confused and in two minds.. :ashamed:

just applied soft foam mod to harx700 :)

it is much more comfortable now

^ which deal in E-zone ? :S. I guess you are talking about the Croma deal ..:P I might let go my SHP 9000 if someone's interested. Need to make up my mind about them .

as tempting as it is...the thing is that i can't afford something at that pricepoint. :(

sweet spot is 1k for new/used. max i can stretch is 1.5k :ashamed:
 
^ Hmmm ,I say save up till you have ~2.5-3kish .. and pickup a used Xonar DX. For you current budget, you might find a used Audigy or something.
