Laptops Heads up: XPS M1330 issues with discrete graphics

@RiO

have any of these issues reported with 1330s without the discreet graphics as well..??

Nope, no complaints from M1330 users with Intel graphics. Good bargain for them - they paid less, so less trouble :D

This has happened to my inspiron 1520 couple of times..Should I get it replaced..Its still under warranty.It has 8600M GT

Update your drivers, there are apparently no issues with 8600M which is installed in the M1530 that seems to be doing alright.

Drivers are updated to 173.xx.Dont remember the exact version.Downloaded from laptopvideo2go.com..Should i download the latest driver available on dell website..

I would try the latest whql drivers from the same site, 169.61 iirc - worked well for me. If that doesn't work, go back to Dell's original driver version to see if the problem goes away.

Bit offtopic,

I hope M1530 does not have these problems, any inputs?

You're in the clear, I haven't read about M1530's crapping out (yet).

I mentioned on page 1, haven't read about complaints relating to the M1530's so I guess they're doing alright.

As pointed out in page 1 and 2 (and now 4), nope!

i went to dell support site, put my service tag number.. n wow, they have preserved all the info.. liked that!!

but i wanted to post the # number of my mobo n graphics card etc.. but the details are so huge in number n i am not able to decipher what are the mobo details n graphic card details..

any help here? or else i can post everything there, which can be skipped if i know what to post here in particular..

wow.. just came across this thread.. had the same issue with my notebook last month... i recieved my 1330 towards the end of november. like some ppl have mentioned, dell replaced the mobo.. everythings been fine ever since.. i just hope this doesnt occur again.. also, im really considering getting the warranty extened.. any clue as to how much that may cost?

You'd have to talk to Dell, you may be able to get a good deal if you negotiate pointing out this inherent issue with their M1330 series.

just some info:

this overheating issue is a problem with M1330 with nVidia 8400 cards ONLY.... the GPU overheats and the mobo craps out

why: m1330's cooling solution(copper -> HSF to remove heat)..... the copper touches the CPU directly, but is only connect to the GPU via thermal pads... (less efficient)... the m1530's cooling solution is similar, but it has springs to push the copper to the GPU instead of using thermal pads, leading to a more effective solution

how to fix: 1) dell to redesign the HSF
2) don't run the laptop in extremely hot conditions/on bed/running in a laptop bag.....
3) take care of your laptop, extended warranty if possible...

Moot point, it was f'ing 12C when my M1330 crapped out. It has nothing to do with ambient temps... over time, M1330's fail.

What about international warranty, Rio? and heck your hard drive is safe man! why worry :S :P

I'm never worried about drives, my data is always spread across multiple computers and on my file server.

No international warranty unless you pay a premium...

Heh, one of my friend's M1330 conked off a week back;

Showed him this thread; :P

He'd got that 2 months back from S'pore apparently; expecting a replacement in a month;

Cursed me a lot since I'd asked him to go for it; :(

all completecover warranties are covered.

all you need to do is get ur service tag changed to the particular country .. its free of cost.. the indian service tag already covers asia pacific.. outside that, u need to fill a simple online form n they transfer ur service tag.

i was considering the 1330 most prolly at the end ofthis year ...but this thread has made me thnk a lot ...are dell aware of this..New batches are out?

or then ill be more peacefull with a macbook pro....btw laptop is gonna be used purely for audio applications

actually a completecover warranty CAN be transferred. Try talkin to dell again :P

I know a couple of frnds who got that done :)
I got enough going on so don't have time for their red tape crap, but I'll try again.

Well, part of the problem is Dell not acknowledging the issue... so far there have only been 1-2 cases I'm aware of where replacements resulted in overheating again. Btw, same sh1t happening with some Alienware M15X notebooks, but they're SLI, so I can only imagine they'd overheat quickly in such a small casing.

Get the Macbook without blinking if your primary usage is music creation, it comes loaded with all the tools to get you started. I'm selling my M1330 for a Macbook and I plan to use this Inspiron for design and work.
