Hey guys I need to convert Avi(xvid) to Mkv(H264) WITHOUT any loss of quality..
Please suggest some Simple tool for the same..
How much will the compression be without any loss in quality..
Say if i hav those 350 mb avi episode of a tv series of 40min, what size should i expect??
I'm not in a mood to sacrifice the quality..Jus some space saving..:)

I doubt you'll be able to compress size from avi to h.264 you could try megui but I dont think its gonna work. Your better of backing your movies up.

Listen guys Im Looking for some GOOD and SIMPLE Programme, i dont think programmes like nero which come in a all-in-one suite would do, a proper encorder is needed as this is my "whole collection" we are talking about...

I don't think conversion from a compressed format (xvid or otherwise) is advised. You are bound to lose quality with any compression format.

Can you point me to the best settings which will ensure same quality at a lower size..
I'm looking at something like 150-170mb files..I hope its possible..
H264 + any popular audio + mkv will do just fine..

Also encoding time wont be much of a factor as i leave laptop on all nite for downloading..

Why are you encoding to .mkv ... not that it isn't a good format, but it is one you would want to compress from the original file. If you want to convert it, use avisynth and VirtualDub

It's a pain in the butt to do this and get a nice high rez conversion....I did this with a very high rez HD ...ahem version of 300. I used avisynth, but it takes a little explaining, and a little digging for the correct syntax to use it, but it is quite fast to encode this way and the results are nice.. Avisynth is used as a container for the mkv file and VirtualDub will convert it for you. If you are interested, I can put up a tut later, but I have to go to work atm... just pm me.
