help buying a home theater

Those Jamos look cheap :P Udit, as you said your sis doesn't much care for music. I doubt she'll be too critical about the speakers. She needs something which looks good, sounds nice, and overall feels like its worth the money spent.
I would suggest something like -
Oppo 720p player with HDMI - $150
Definitive Technolgy Procinema 600 (Under $800)
Panasonic SA-XR57K Digital Home Theater Receiver - $400
A good 720p display (not sure here) - $800-1000

I wouldn't make a blanket statement like Def Tech > Jamo. But Def Tech doesn't make any bad products, unlike Jamo, whose cheaper speakers are jsut that. Cheap

somebody give me online buying links forr:

Definitive Technolgy Procinema 600 Speakers & Panasonic SA-XR57K Digital Home Theater Receiver before Sunday

I actually wanted to edit my post but I couldn't, but Def Tech entry level packages beat almost any brand hollow. Especially the entry level sub that's really a VFM product.

Its a shame that they are priced horribly in India :(

About the TV.. have a look at this Buy.com - Olevia 232T - 32'' LCD HDTV w/ Built in NTSC/ATSC Tuner- 1600:1 Dynamic Contrast Ratio - 8ms Response Time - 232T Not a bad deal for about 500 bucks..
The link for the Panny XR 57 is Receivers - SA-XR57S at Panasonic.com

Did you look at Home Theater Speakers - Orb Audio , I'd still say ask your sis to hear (and look) them before making a decision if you haven't already :)

For DVD player, I'd suggest the latest Oppo OPPO DV-981HD 1080p Up-Converting Universal DVD Player with HDMI it's got 1080i/p upconversion although depending on the TV you could also go for the cheaper OPPO DV-970HD 720p/1080i Up-Converting Universal DVD Player with HDMI

^ 1600:1 contrast ratio for a TV, your kidding right ?

Even a Samsung Sonoma Trenz (which is pathetic to say the least) has a CR of 7000:1

That LCD is probably 2 generations older ;)

Those Jamos look very big. Are you sure your sis will like those? My experience is that women would like something compact.

As for Definitive vs. Jamo, the low-end Jamos suck big time, but Def Tech entry level models aren't that great either. They look impressive because of specs and built-in subs, but score pretty badly on reviews. Also the Cinema system is an HT set, whereas the Jamos are just the front floorstanders - big difference.
