Hello friends

I have a Compaq Presario SR1920IL desktop. Following is the base configuration:
Processor: P4 HT 3.06 GHz, 533 MHz FSB, Socket 775
Chipset: ATI Radeon Xpress 200
Supported Memory: 2Gb (2 x 1Gb) 240 pin DDR2 SDRAM, PC2-4200 Mb/sec

Detailed specs: Click here.

My problem:

I tried installing 2 x 1Gb DDR2 SDRAM running at 667 MHz (Dynet), but my PC refused to start. When I removed one 1 Gb RAM it worked fine.

I use my PC for some good amount of Graphics work and playing games (Far Cry is the heaviest game that my PC can take). I want to upgrade memory to 2 Gb. But there are no 533MHz DDR2 SDRAM available in the market.

My question:
Can I use the good quality 667~800Mhz DDR2 SDRAM available in the market with my PC? What are the problems that I am likely to face.

Additional info: I stay in Pune

Any suggestions would be of great help! :thanx:

P.S.: This is the first time I'm posting in a technical forum. I apologise if I made any mistakes... :(

The DDR2 800/667 mhz should be backwards compatible, so you should face no issues there.

Make sure you pair identical model RAM's only in the system, as doing otherwise cause a lot of issues on many boards. So if you have a 533mhz module in your PC, you will need to replace that.

Thank you very much for the quick reply Aces!! :)

Can you guide me as to which pair of sticks should I buy?

I can spend around 3k on them...

I see a lot of cooled RAMS nowadays. Will it be a good idea a pair of those?

Thanks again...

Hm. Go for Gskill 800mhz pi black locally.

1*2 gig should cost about 3k.

And well if you are looking to change the mobo soon, ordering it from KMD will net you 2 times the rams 2*2 gb for 3150.

The Gskill pi black, are good ram's they clock well at default voltages, otherwise get Corsair value, you do get 5 yrs warranty on them. In any case any of those modules should be good for you at stock frequencies.

@bashed

GSkill Pi Blacks are NOT available Locally.

The XMS modules are actually cheaper than the Value sticks :). XMS2 costs 850 odd per stick while value costs 1300 odd (not too sure about this info though. do check dealer section)

i had a compaq pc with same motherboard and pentium d 800mhz fsb processor , even if u put 667/800 it will run at 533mhz max , so no use of buying expensive ram.

If your PC only supports DDR2-533, higher speed memory will run @533mhz. There's no problem there.

On the other hand, voltages could be a problem. The page you linked to doesn't state the exact mobo model, but I guess it's probably an Intel D102GGC2. I had the same board, and it will only run at 1.8v. So check the voltage req. of the ram first, although Dynet shouldn't be giving you problems.

Hope this helps.. I'm not well-versed in memory frequencies and voltages. The guru's can probably help you out more.

Thanks Robo. I do know that even if I put a higher frequency RAM it will still run at 533 Mhz. The problem is that I'm not getting any 533Mhz PC24800 RAM locally!!

I checked some US sites, where the RAM is available, but I don't have any relative there :(

Any suggestions?

Thank you for your responses. I think I'll go for the G Skill or Corsair sticks. I'll update you guys when I've finally bought them.:D

Once again. Thank you for your help!!:hap2: :hap2:

even with 533 fsb cpu u can run the memory at 800 if ur board supports the memory divider config. running in ratio 1:1.5 fsb:mem wud make ur cpu run at 533 n u can enjoy the memory speed of 800mhz.:D

Sorry for my ignorance. But what do you mean by KMD?

KatManDude

He is one of the registered dealers on TE - quite popular and excellent service.
