hey guys .. need some help regarding customs.

what happened is I had ordered a Razer Mantis SPEED mousepad from www.razerzone.com and i had paid a total of 35$ (including shipping charges) which is around 1500 rupees for the same .

Now i got a call from the FED EX branch in my city today and they were like telling me that ill have to pay a duty of 4,000/- rupees for the mouse pad which FED EX had paid on my behalf to the customs people at the Mumbai Intl Airport. I instantly rushed to their office hearing this and took a print out of the invoice from the razer website with me. I tied explaining to the FED EX guy that the mouse pad was only for 25$ (10$ is the shipping charge) and I should pay duty of 36% on that. He then showed me the customs paper and what those customs bastards had done was they had assessed my mousepad to be of the value of 10,000/- rupees and had charged a duty of 36% on that. LMAO.

Now if i need the mouse pad i have to pay a total of 4k to the FED EX chap to take it home and so obviously I have rejected it.

I want to know if there is any way out for this and does anybody have some contact with the Mumbai customs people ??

same happend to me for the free ubuntu cds, the postman asked me to pay 400 bucks if i wanted the cd. The customs officals seem to be crazy these days.

well, what bs posts all around in this thread..

anyway, just send it back, and email the Razer store ppl about it, these guys usually undervalue the stuff that they send to avoid custom hassels, maybe in this case they forgot, which is again highly unlikely, in either case, email them and wait for them to reply, the store people are very helpfull and am sure they wud resolve ur issue either they will send u a new pad undervalued or something else.

If you dont get a reply from them, lemme know, ill give u the email address of the man in charge ;)

hmm
well this is what many call the vicious cycle of corruption or so.

Best of luck with your fight against the custom guys MOhit...

I have emailed razer as well as FED EX .. got a reply from razer and the babe is telling me to wait for Jude, their ops & log manager to get back to me.

I emailed FED EX also asking them to go and get a refund for wrongly charged duties on my package as the Customs Dept. has a provision for refund.

Also tried emailing Senior Customs officers on the ids given on their website but all of the mails bounced back.. those pricks dont use them i suppose.

How did the customs assess that it was 10,000 bucks? Wasn't there a bill with Fedex with the actual pricing? I think you better go back to the Fedex office and talk to a high-level manager there and explain the problem. It's their own mistake for paying 4k worth of customs on a 1,500 buck mousepad.

Tell them that you'll either pay the correct customs amount or you want your money back, make that clear to them. It's a CLEAR MISTAKE on their part and you shouldn't have to suffer for it.

ya that is exactly what i have emailed to FED EX on their website .. that either I get the correct value of duties or else I wont accept the package and so it will be a loss for both of us but a greater loss for FED EX .. as they will be at a loss of 4k and ill be at a loss of 1.5k ..hehe.

mohit come on chap.......u hav to think abt yourself........fed ex may b earning in crores.....so 4k will b say 40bucks for them........
its important to try hard frm your side after all its your money..........

ya i knw .. if nuthing works i am going to drag them to the consumer court ..wont leave this matter until it gets resolved.

I too feel for him.

But then going to court for 1.5K is ridiculous.

And it wont have any effect man...... Mohit is not the first and certainly not the last to get cheated by the corrupt officials. He will also not be the first to expose them in case he does decide to go to court.

It has all happened before man..... Something drastic needs to happen.

All the best man, keep fighting... !

Fed-Ex guys usually understand, I've worked with them before, very co-operative..:D

@Nikhil

its not about the money dood .. and anyways i am not going to take any customs officer to the consumer court .. ill take FED EX there .. it was their resposibility to get my thing cleared properly and they did not do that .. this should atelast teach them to be careful next time. and if i dont do anything now they might just take it as nobody complains n shit.

Well, I will reserve my comments for the time being.

did the package come with a bill or a declaration of some sort saying that the value was 1.5K??

I mean was that document INSIDE the package or what??

Coz the Fed Ex people are not all-knowing. MAybe the bill was INSIDE the package and so when the customs guys said value is 10K, Fed-Ex did not have any way of finding whether they were correct or not.

Find out all the details and post back. If the bill was with Fed Ex and they had READ it that the value os 1.5K and they stiull paid up 4K, then it was foolishness......

there was a bill put on the outside clearly stating the value of the package .. and there was another receipt put for the value of customs duty in India .. that was filled as 450 rupees .. I dont know what this FED EX guy was doing when the thing was getting cleared.

Dude, infact no Duty should be charged. Its just a piece of cloth.

Theres no Import duty on "Cloth".

Did you get it anyways?
