Help me get rid of mosquitoes (anything except zapper racquet)

We had a terrible horde of mosquitoes when we open the door to our flat (3rd floor). Dad hung a small plastic container with holes in it and the horde is no more. We have also put them in our rooms at relatively dark books and crannies. It appears to be effective so far.
Anything inside those containers?

Why is it working when people say it should not be

Amazing insights...
One of the MOST important things to do to reduce Mosquito population is to ensure areas around you are DRY. Tires, Buckets, Barrels, Empty pots and other small areas can accumulate water. Stagnant water is ideal mosquito breeding ground.
Secondly, close dustbins tightly. Waste attracts mosquitos.
The Zapper is by far the most effective technique to kill mosquitos. However, the MOST important thing is to prevent mosquitos from entering the house in the first place. Hence, lock up doors and windows early evening before the sun goes down.
Check for small gaps or openings in between windows, and ensure doors are flush with their frames. Mosquitos can easily make their way inside a house through cracks. Hence a proper seal EVERYWHERE is CRITICAL.
Use Nets on Doors and Windows. This will ensure ventilation while keeping mosquitos out. This a multi-day project.

have y'all tried something like All Out Flash Guard? that was my go to when I was in a hostel, not sure if it'll have the same allergens as a normal all out but maybe its worth a try?

I read about this allout all night and seems overall it seems to be very effective as per all the reviews.

Nothing mentioned about their APM formula. Indian companies are actively avoiding stating the active ingredient used in their products now. It could just be air and nothing else or same thing used in their liquid. I don't buy such products which go out of their way to hide what chemicals they are using. It could be ddt or anything harmful to children and humans if its so effective. Could turn out to be a well known neurotoxin that harms humans. If they hide the chemical it means they know people will search the net and figure out the side effects.

I read somewhere that moth balls repel lizards but it doesn't seem to work on a lizard in my house. The part about the moth ball giving headache and dizziness is true though. Just one moth ball has such bad smell that i hate i used it inside the house.

Because legally speaking in India they're not required to unless its a medicine. Its voluntary

Trade secret more like

Not ddt. But DEET like you get in Odomos works. At the low concentration used its not harmful.

It's risky to use harmful substances. Why would you dothat and risk a police case.

Bad idea like I could make a company selling unknown poison uses something like asbestos and not label it and people will keep using it for years and not find out anything. My mind reels with the idea who in govt taking these decisions thought its okay to make it voluntary. No wonder we get toxic trash from china in stuff we buy here. Who knows what chemicals food colouring has if its not mentioned? Could be anything.

Lol, what trade secrets? You say it like Indian companies are doing some research on their own. They just license stuff from Bayer or other companies and copy all the formulas in their products. If they had trade secrets why don't they take out TM or patents on it and then tell us what they use instead of spouting marketting terms like APM or advanced formula??
These same companies if they want to sell their products in EU, they will roll over like dogs and happily list list out everything in exact percentage /concentration.

How do you know what is exactly is used if they didn't bother even printing it? Everything you wrote is just a conjecture. Its your own opinion. Police case will come only if people can co relate their product directly to something harmful which happened to them after using the product. What will people do if there is no direct side effect and no evidence? No police case.

regarding plants grow marigold, lavender & basil plants .Since you are in mumbai all your windows will be grilled than use magnetic/velcro mosquito net or Pleated/sliding mosquito net.

Anything that gets you killed is bad for business.

Then go advocate to change the laws. Ive already posted about this with the RB company. The laws abroad stipulate they do so they comply.

Take a look at an Odomos tube when you get time.

That's what you're doing to scare monger. My aunts used to go on about this food colouring business to the point I got fed up of it. Twenty years ago.

Then you don't have a case do you.

All Indian houses should be designed to be completely sealed and central AC built in, balconies should have mosquito nets. It will take care of dust, pollution and mosquitoes in one go. Only entry point remaining for mosquitoes will be the main entrance door.

May be, an Indian version of construction inspired from energy efficient passive houses can be interesting:

This is the exact opposite of how traditional indian homes were built. With opposimg windows so there was always a draft and circulation. The walls were thick which helped with the heat. With high humidity all you needed was a ceiling fan.

Central AC? Back in 2007 the bangalore city council decided to increase property tax of homes with central AC. Pretty much killing the idea at inception.

Traditional homes were designed for a time when there was no electricity. If air circulation was enough, you would just need a exhaust fan to cool down and no one would need ACs. The positioning of rooms and materials, etc can indeed reduce cooling load a bit, but it's not going to work any magic. Also they didn't have as much pollution back then. And of course central AC doesn't mean there is no air circulation.

You don't have to tell the city council, duh

I am in Mumbai and not sure about your setup but after my building was redeveloped, the first thing I did was to have an extra rail setup outside the normal window ones.

This accommodates extra window frames built by the same shop that the builder used but has an aluminium mesh instead of glass that has kept mosquitoes away for the better part of the past 6 years.

Mosquitoes only get in occasionally when the main door is opened at night but haven't had to use any form of mosquito repellers for the past few years.

Basically preventing mosquitoes from getting in from the windows is the best solution by far.

@raksrules
Something like this https://www.rei.com/product/241574/thermacell-mr450-mosquito-repeller

There is one more model E90 from thermacell which has amazing reviews. It covers lot of area too.
Check it out.

There use to be this German guy in one of our treks ..who was carrying very small one and he said it works well.
I don't know maybe some European company makes even smaller versions of these anti mosquito device.

This reminds me of the old blue square tablet machines from the early 2000s (and seems like a lighter integrated to provide heat)

Some old but highly effective Recipes for Mosquito reduction in house:
Regularly "fumigate" your house. The simplest recipe is dried coconuts and husk. Burn them, and when they turn into embers, add some "dhoop".
Eat foods that are low in Sugar and Carbohydrates. Also avoid beer. Mosquitos use scent, and specifically CO2 emissions, to zero-in on their target. Hence, mosquitos bite some people more than others.
During Summers, bathe at least twice. This will reduce the amount of sweat and odor from body, thereby reducing your "visibility" to mosquitos.
Some plants have natural mosquito repellent properties. But their efficacy is doubtful especially if the problem is big.
Simply put, avoid growth and propagation, while deploying equipment that keeps mosquitos away.
