friends,

in last fortnight i have encountered this strange problem.

my pc runs fine and no probs.

but sometimes after i shutdown my system now and when again i restart my system i see a pop up window mentioning that generic host problem occured with time of yesterday.

i have enclosed the problem pics and report file here.

i recalled this to occur when my maxthon browser hanged next session i found this problem. (same thing happened i had to shut down the browser to open the forums and sancharnet website and then i had to use opera to reuse the net) today morning i found this problem.

can any one point me to the prob. thanks in advance.

my config:
win xp home
kaspersky anti virus updated
sygate personal firewall
spybot s and d updated
adaware updated
spyware blaster updated.

hardware p4 2 ghz + intel d845 mb + 512 mb ram + samsung 40 gb 7200 rpm + liteon dvd combo + samsung cd rom + pinnacle pctv plus tv tuner + geforce 4 mx 440 64 mb ram gfx card .

That means one of the xp services has / had crashed.
svchost.exe manages the various services /W32 processes in XP.it is a generic term.

Check your event logs for the actual service / application which has / had crashed.

To disable the above message disable the error reporting via the "Systems Properties" -> "Advanced" tab.

or you can also go in the "startup and recovery section" , "settings" and disable the "send an administrative alert" option.

The presence of memory.dmp file in the %systemroot% or %systemroot%/minidump folder generally gives this reminder error message.

You can delete those memory dump files.

@XTerminator : well i ditched the maxthon browser.
downloading the latest ff and maxthon both again a fresh

@deejay : i had deleted the *.mdump and *.hdump file created when the first time this thing happened. it recreated them. and problem does not occur in real time. it notifies after next boot. and i do not mind these messages as they happen very rarely to me.

@blade : yes i have everything till date on windows update installed on my system i have win xp home licensed version.

thanks for your replies friends, if the problem recurrs i will append here with latest. till then wait for someone else to reply.

if you wont or cannot tell us which service / process was the cause of the error there is very little we can do.

Hence the answers would be generic in nature too.
as mentioned before , check your event logs.

@deejay : what i have mentioned the two images and attached log file are the only thing i get.

if there are any more event logs to look for where can they be located. i can find them and post for you to analyse.
thanks for the help.

i am using ff for this posting but the forum is too slow with ff than with maxthon and the popblocker is also not working properly i think i am better with maxthon and opera.

Assuming u r using xp,

Goto "start menu", click "help and support" and from "pick a task", open "Use Tools to view your computer information and diagnose problems". From "tools", select "advanced system information", open the "view error log". Here u will be able to view all the error messages.

I will also strongly suggest to run SFC /SCANNOW from the "run" command to make sure all system files are in original condition (not corrupted). :cool2:

Learn more about SFC here

Dr., Make firefox faster using these simple tweaks. :)

Hope these helps.

@ barbie girl this is what i found with log messages.

the instances of wdm capture device service control manager failed are repeated for daily logs.

the other file mentiones other instances in the same log file.

damn : my sfc / scannow does not do anything.

it just flashes a black command prompt window and disappears.

i think i have a big serious problem on my hand.

waiting for your guidance, friends.

Thats better. you could have used the event viewer too to get the above info.
Re: these errors

Wednesday, March 16, 2005 Service Control Manager The BtCap, WDM Video Capture service failed to start due to the following error: The system cannot find the file specified.

Wednesday, March 16, 2005 Service Control Manager The BtTuner, WDM TV Tuner service failed to start due to the following error: The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.

Wednesday, March 16, 2005 Service Control Manager The BtXBar, WDM Crossbar service failed to start due to the following error: The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it

These relate to your tv tuner card.

apparently it seems you have uninstalled the drivers for it but it seems these drivers are still being referenced by your m/c.

Solution. install the same driver once again and then use the control panel add /remove option to uninstall them.

Re: this error

Thursday, March 31, 2005 Service Control Manager The Intel(R) Active Monitor service depends on the Intel(R) SMBus 2.0 Driver service which failed to start because of the following error: The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.

This is because you have not installed the smbus driver for your m/b.

without this you will not get the temperature and fan spedd measurments with the intel active monitor.

Solution: reinstall the smbus driver from your m/b driver cd.

confirm that this error message goes away and then download and install the latest driver for your m/b from the intel website.

Re: this error

Saturday, April 02, 2005 Service Control Manager The Application Management service terminated with the following error: The specified module could not be found.

This shows one of the services / netsvc is either missing or corrupt or disabled.

You may do one thing . go to the same page as you had located the error logs (advanced system information) but select the second option of "View Running Services" and post the complete screen shot here.

There is a service called AppMgmt too.;)

and i will not recommend you use SFC / scannow. since it will replace any corrupted or missing files with the original one from the install cd.

hence you will have to reinstall all the XP service packs, upgrades etc...

go to your services,(admin tools via control panel),click the Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) icon and disable it and check .

@medpal, there is no space before "scannow", it has to be "SFC /SCANNOW" ie, SFC <SPACE> /SCANNOW. It is perfectly safe to run sfc /scannow command.

@deejay, have u tried running running sfc with an older version of xp cd. :)It will not run. It will detect an updated version in ur pc and close. The version of system files in ur pc has to match with those (version shud be either equal or higher in cd) in cd.

If ur pc is win xp sp2, then u'll need an sp2 cd (can be easily slipstreamed) to run sfc /scannow.

So trying the sfc command willnot de-grade ur system files.

Microsoft ppl are not that much 1d1ots :ohyeah:

True. but how many users you know who have slipstreamed , "bootable" winxp cd.??
and if the user knows about slipstreaming a bootable cd he would generally be "answering" questions here and not "asking" questions here. one has to take that into consideration before replying to queries. The essence of pc support is in quickly judging the level of expertise of the person who is seeking support.
I generally find it easier to do a "repair" install. and then apply the needed updates and patches Which microsoft releases regularly every month on others pc if needed.
ps: till date i have not had the oppurtunity to do either a repair install or SFC on my m/c. :ohyeah: ,and i hope the oppurtunity never arises.

@Bsky, do he need the said service for uploading images from his digicam to pc?

To disable the above message disable the error reporting via the "Systems Properties" -> "Advanced" tab.

or you can also go in the "startup and recovery section" , "settings" and disable the "send an administrative alert" option.

@deejay, what solution these steps provide?? Simply mask the error message??

@ Medpal, I would suggest this

1. run "sfc /scannow". Pls copy/ paste the above command from here (without quotes) to the run box to prevent any typo.

Believe me, it will do no harm. Normally, the sfc command first verifies each system file and compares it with the backup in ur pc (DLLCache folder). If the folder is also corrupted, then it will ask for xp cd. Since u hve sp2 installed, u'll need a xp sp2 cd to run the command, otherwise a message will pop up saying an updated version is installed in ur pc and it will then close. (pls lemme know, if u need to make a xp sp2 slipstreamed cd, if u don't hve one).

If the problem is due to a corrupted system file, then this will solve the problem.

2. In the run box, type "msinfo32" (no quotes again), hit enter. this will open the all-in-all system information.

Now, doubleclick on "components" under "system summary", goto 'problem devices" and see if any is listed.

Go thru all the submenu's under "hardware resources" and "components" and check the status (it shud be listed as ok) of each device.

Click open "software environment". Here u will see "running tasks', status of each service", 'loaded modules" and also the 'error report".

Dr., U can also save the report as an "NFO" file and post it here, so that Deejay can help u much much better.

@deejay :after studying the error report i found two things which i reinstalled.
the tv tuner software and smbus driver. thanks for pointing out.

for running services this is what i get it goes on and on and does not enlist anything.

what could be the reason?

@barbie girl :
sfc /scannow : requires sp2 slipstreamed cd and i do not have one. i know how to do it but this is the major problem in my system`s 3 years age so i have not bothered to do it i may do it now.

msinfo32 : does not point any problem devices everything is mentioned as ok.
even in conflicts/sharing this is what pointed.

I/O Port 0x000003B0-0x000003BB NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440

the error report there does not give any thing extra other than those mentioned in earlier report.

@bosky101 : i have digicam so i need to upload images to system and default application with camera is too slow to upload so i use windows resident uploader.

i think the culprit could be i once installed vcd cutter and it installs the wdm video drivers for that and the wdm driver pointed in earlier report could be the one.

i have reinstalled the smbus and pinnacle pctv tv tuner cards.

Hi doc,

Are you still getting those svchost.exe errors upon reboot.??
to get the list of the status all the services run this.
Start-> Run -> %SystemRoot%\system32\services.msc /s

* just copy paste the above command in red in the run window.

This should give you a list of all services on your m/c and their current status.

you can post a complete screen shot(s) of the window here or you can , in that window select "Action" then "Export List" and post that .TXT fle here.

This will aid us in comparing your current services status with the windows default.

incase nothing or an error is displayed then further debugging will be required.

to undestand the problem better i am pasting the info about svchost as given in the Help and Support section.

INTRODUCTION
This article describes Svchost.exe and its functions. Svchost.exe is a generic host process name for services that run from dynamic-link libraries (DLLs). Back to the top
MORE INFORMATION
The Svchost.exe file is located in the %SystemRoot%\System32 folder. At startup, Svchost.exe checks the services part of the registry to construct a list of services that it must load. Multiple instances of Svchost.exe can run at the same time. Each Svchost.exe session can contain a grouping of services. Therefore, separate services can run, depending on how and where Svchost.exe is started. This grouping of services permits better control and easier debugging.
Svchost.exe groups are identified in the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Svchost

Each value under this key represents a separate Svchost group and appears as a separate instance when you are viewing active processes. Each value is a REG_MULTI_SZ value and contains the services that run under that Svchost group. Each Svchost group can contain one or more service names that are extracted from the following registry key, whose Parameters key contains a ServiceDLL value: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Service

To view the list of services that are running in Svchost: 1.Click Start on the Windows taskbar, and then click Run.2.In the Open box, type CMD, and then press ENTER.3.Type Tasklist /SVC, and then press ENTER.Tasklist displays a list of active processes. The /SVC switch shows the list of active services in each process. For more information about a process, type the following command, and then press ENTER: Tasklist /FI "PID eq processID" (with the quotation marks)

The following example of Tasklist output shows two instances of Svchost.exe that are running. Image Name PID Services ======================================================================== System Process 0 N/A System 8 N/A Smss.exe 132 N/A Csrss.exe 160 N/A Winlogon.exe 180 N/A Services.exe 208 AppMgmt,Browser,Dhcp,Dmserver,Dnscache, Eventlog,LanmanServer,LanmanWorkstation, LmHosts,Messenger,PlugPlay,ProtectedStorage, Seclogon,TrkWks,W32Time,Wmi Lsass.exe 220 Netlogon,PolicyAgent,SamSs Svchost.exe 404 RpcSs Spoolsv.exe 452 Spooler Cisvc.exe 544 Cisvc Svchost.exe 556 EventSystem,Netman,NtmsSvc,RasMan, SENS,TapiSrv Regsvc.exe 580 RemoteRegistry Mstask.exe 596 Schedule Snmp.exe 660 SNMP Winmgmt.exe 728 WinMgmt Explorer.exe 812 N/A Cmd.exe 1300 N/A Tasklist.exe 1144 N/A The registry setting for the two groupings for this example are as follows: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Svchost:
