As much as this may sound strange.....for what he will be using it for intel would be the better choice :)

My Usage will be
1. Gaming(like HL2, DOOM3, NFS UG2,Splinter Cell Chaos,etc) in a good settings.>>AMD
2.internet>>Intel+AMD (multi tasking=intel)
3.Image editing(Photoshop)>>Intel
4.Watching DVD/Videos etc..>>Intel
5. Creating Home videos>>Intel
but I have no idea whats available in india O_o.....

maybe a 6xx series intel proc. and 915, 944 or 955 chipset.....i saw some p5w asus boards being advertised at ritchie street...not sure about pricing though..

If you would like i can find out and get some specs+pricing out...im going to ritchie today

for Internet and Watching DVD/Videos even a Sempron or Celeron D would be more than enuf.... So there wouldnt be any different between P4 or A64...

For Imaging Editing and Creating Home Videos P4 is better... but an overclocked A64 venice would easily outperform a p4.... right?

So its better to go for A64 rather than a P4

lol...maybe you forgot you can OC P4's *sigh*

LOL, any proc oced will ofcourse beat another that is not...

and its not like P4's cant play games...1-7 FPS MAX!

U need aftermarket/water cooling to oc a p4 *sigh* :)

lol, on stock cooling mine maxes at 56C full load....

But ok...the prescott runs into heat probs on stock cooling if your EXTREME overclocking...but otherwise it should be ok

but ~73C load should be ok ;)

yea, maybe a bit of throttling, i was saying for the health of the proc.

mine loads 53C with stock...so i still have room for ocing

okokok. Intel is good. But i am going for AMD 64 bit 3000+. Coz i play more games then making home videos.

Here's a rough sketch of a decent config: (Prices courtesy of www.deltapage.com)
A64 3000+ ~ 7250
Asus A8N-E ~ 6600
Hynix 1GB (512MBx2) DDR 400 ~ 4400
BIG 6600GT ~ 9000

Seagate 120GB SATA HDD ~ 3850
Benq DW 1640 ~ 3600
FDD ~ 290

Samsung 17" Flat monitor ~ 6850
MM Keyboard ~ 475
MS Wheel Mouse Optical ~ 800
Altec Lansing ATP3 ~ 3000
Antec 1650 ~ 3000
External TV Tuner card ~ (2000?)

XP Home Edition ~ 3500

Total ~ 52615 (54615)

I'm not quite sure how much a good external TV tuner card would retail for. The stuff available on the market is mostly the generic Mercury, zebronics crap for around 1.1K. A decent one I guess should cost near about 2K.
Your total is around about 55K, you have another 5K spare. With the 5K, you can consider either a slightly higher graphics card like the 6800NU, or an A64 3200+, or anything else you feel is lacking. And mind you, the cabinet + power supply is the most important part of your config. It can save you a LOT of trouble, so dont hesitate to invest in a good brand like Antec.

It should be around 9k to 10k depending upon the brands like XFX, leadtek, MSI, ASUS eyc.. As far as i know the 256MbDDR3 6600GT from leadtek cost 13k in chennai, you can get one from Zebronics in spencers. Also i think u get 2 full version games with it, even for the 128MB 6600GT.

Guys i think 6800GT is out of question for him.
I had talk to him on MSN and he wants everything in 60K. That include legit OS, and UPS too.
I wont recommend any msi board with the RAMs that we get here. 2.85vdimm is too less for likes of hynix D43. And personally i prefer good dealer than cheap dealer ;)
ok you can go to service centre yourself and blah blah. but someone of you much have experienced bad response from their side. Specifically if u r directly going to the distros.
Having a good dealer gives you peace of mind, i know if anything happens to my system the max i will have to do it a 10 minute drive.
So do advice him a good dealers in chennai.

^^ In that case, the config I recommended should suit him well. And yes, 6800GT PCI-E cards are still expensive around the 19K mark i guess. Only AGP 6800GTs are slightly cheaper, however it would still be out of budget. 6800NU's might come in his budget, and could be unlocked as well (where's anish? ;) )

^^Hehe Eddy, IF you are talking about the leadtek 6800GT then those have 900Mhz ram as opposed to 1Ghz. ;) Hence the cheaper price tag. Else from what i have heard XFX is gonna reduce the price when the new stock comes into the market.

i think there are quite a few good dealers in ritchie street , delta and krish and a few others. but dont expect a lot from then knowledgewise so you have to be very specific while asking for parts . if this is your first system i suggest asking a friend to help or paying someone to assemble it for you. once u see how its done once the next time its pretty easy ;)

abe duffer...PCI-E 6800NU cannot be unlocked :P

^^ Oops, Pardon me for that mistake :P

Delta Peripherals is good, they have fast moving inventory and manage to get a hold of pretty recent stuff (like the Venice etc) - the big headache is that since they are pretty popular, it gets so crowded at times, you will have a tough time even getting into the shop!

Krish on the other hand, while the guys there are pretty friendly, they seem to have pretty outdated stock in their store , i cant even see an Athlon64 on their shelves.
