Since I had a socket 479 mobile CPU lying around, I got myself a Asus PTGV-DM (ONYX2-GL8E) mini ITX motherboard. Little did I know that my CPU was pulled off of a laptop and the MB would not come with the CPU heatsink/ cooler. It just has the chipset heatsink over its intel 915GV chipset. Looking at the heatsink mounting around the CPU, it looks like the exact same heatsink would fit over the CPU. Its the kind of heatsink with a metal clip. The clip is a single pin/ wire running in between the heatsink and connected at diagonally opposite ends outside the heatsink onto the motherboard. Following pics might make things clearer:

1. The existing chipset heatsink showing the bottom latch:

2. The existing chipset heatsink showing the top latch:

3. The entire motherboard. Rectangles show the latches where the CPU heatsink clips will fit:

What do I call such a heatsink and where do I find it (at lamington road or elsewhere) in Mumbai?

Does someone know any computer scrap shop where I might be lucky to scavange such a thing?

TIA,

Bandu.

IMO, an older desktop chipsets heatsink might fit on your CPU. This would be quite easy. Finding the proper laptop HS will be difficult. Planning to go tomorrow, lets see what i can scrounge from Lamington.

@vivek.krishnan: Thanks! Please update me about your findings after you are back from Lamington road. I'll also be visiting this Saturday.

Please note: It's a mini itx desktop board... a laptop heatsink won't work for it. AFAIK, even older desktop CPU heatsinks had some kind of mounting option with 4 holes on the motherboard. This MB does not have any holes. Just two protruding rings of some kind. Here is another pic showing these two heatsink holders around the CPU socket:

@6pack: The heatsink/ cooler is meant for the CPU, but the mobo does not have any mounting options for a regular heatsink/ cooler that you normally find. Not even the cooler that you linked (but it still is the mPGA479 socket). The cooler in your link seems to have 4 screws, but this ASUS mobo does not have any place to fit those screws. It's a "m" socket - for mobile/ laptop processors.

Thanks.

Thanks to #vivek.krishnan the other day. We met at lammy and with his help, we got a cheap (30 bucks) heatsink from scrap dealers there. Just have to make a clip to make it work.
