hey guys...

i recently bought a Canon 1000d...
am a little above newbie in photography and not that aware of the details of the lens...

i am planning to buy an entry level, 200mm zoom lens(for long shots) or a gud quality Prime(for high quality pic) lens...
dont know which one is better...

my needs are,
> average zoom (for long shots)
> photo quality

my budget is around 10K...

though i will be buying the lens after 2 months... need to know the details and play with the kit lens for a while to understand them...

plz help...

Re: help needed in chosing a lens for DSLR...

the kit lens itself is a 50mm... and i wld like to prefer some avg zoom, coz most of the time i ll be shooting wild lives...

also, suggest some gud brands...
heard tamron is better than sigma... is that true?

Re: help needed in chosing a lens for DSLR...

you can get 75-300 usm 8-9k or
55-250mm IS lens which will be around 10-13k price..
better go for the lens with IS as it will provide good results....

for the primes u should be sure of what u want to shot and around wht focal length u are shooting most..based on that only take a decision

Re: help needed in chosing a lens for DSLR...

what are the things shd one need to consider b4 going for primes?

and any suggested after market brand?

Re: help needed in chosing a lens for DSLR...

Canon 55-250mm IS lens is what you are looking for in the given price range.

other cheaper makes of around 300mm from sigma/tamron are not that great in performance these are day time lens you may say.

check fredmiranda for reviews..

Re: help needed in chosing a lens for DSLR...

yes but also keep in mind that 55-250 is a EF-S lens, if ur upgrading ur camera to something other than APS-C then it wont work. Other than that it's a good lens.

Re: help needed in chosing a lens for DSLR...

i just checked to confirm dat 1000d supports all EF-S lenses...

but just being curious, wats APS-C mean?

Re: help needed in chosing a lens for DSLR...

^^^ fancy term for a smaller sensor.

Don't worry, go out and have some kick ass fun. :)

Good luck.

Re: help needed in chosing a lens for DSLR...

APS-C is a sensor type that's all, smallest sensor in canon slrs. 1000 will support both EF and EF-S lenses, i said if u plan to buy a new higher camera which support only EF.

Re: help needed in chosing a lens for DSLR...

buddy, 50mm f/1.8 is way different than your kit lens, which also has a 50mm focal length...

it difference is aperture.. while 50mm f/1.8 can take you the the largest size of F/1.8, the max. for you kit lens at 50mm is f/5.6... a way difference in the stops...

so dont think that 50mm F/1.8 II go useless for you coz you have that FL in your 18-55mm lens itself..

also, skip Canon 75-300mm III{the cheap one} if looking for tele zoom...
better to go for canon 55-250mm IS... much better deal..

also, dont worry about EF-S mount.. it really dont make the sense..
when you would be buying a 1.5L full frame DSLR anyday, you surely wont be using a 10K EF-S mount lens.. so dont thing of the mount issue...

+1

....as for wildlife, you are better off with a fixed 200mm than a variable.

I really don't know many lenses for wildlife in your budget with IS.

^^ Agreed. Just get the Canon lens. It can double as a pseudo macro lens since it has a good magnification. :)

Though IMO, you should really invest in a short photography course to learn the very basics of photography. In fact IMO all beginners should go for such a course.

^^ Canon itself holds these courses regularly in Metros, check out the official Outlet they will surly have registartions, they are generally help on the weekend and I believe they are free or very inexpensive. Check it out....

^^ Can you give a bit more detail about the course you are referring to?

Yes you must have gotten coupons for it i guess, if u buy from an authorized seller they will give you these coupons under canon edge program.(Don't know if they give them now) you will have a membership card and 3 coupons.
