CPU/Mobo Help needed with Mobo and RAM

hello!!!
My first post!

was wondering what is a good mobo for my processor??
Intel PIV 3.0ghz with HT
currently run a D865GBF.. with 256MB ram.:(

I want to increase my ram to 512 and would like to know what speed and what brand RAM to get?

PS I am in chennai and am 15ys so am kinda on a budget..:S

And your budget is?

Your gonna buy another 256 MB stick ofcourse right?

Get the same1 as which is already there in your PC.
 
it would be easier if you quote your budget. and as for the ram, if you are getting a new 512mb stick, go for the transcend ddr400

Regarding your query, get the same brand's RAM which your PC currently has to avoid compatibility problems... :D
 
How do I check the brand of RAM allready installed?

I have 2X128MB ram right now.

I plan to get 2X256Mb ram or get 1 512Mb ram.. which is better?

and what speed and what brand?

the Mobo will have to wait for around one more month.

yea th abuget for ram is around 4-5k?? is that enough??

u get dual channel if u opt for 2x256...so i guess 2x256 is better

More the Ram, the merrier you get.. :P... Faster Load times, no choppy performance....blah blah...

OFcourse, above 2 GB ram slows you down :P...

What about the speed of Ram being reading abt ddr2 and stuff like that...

what does higher speed Ram give??

and does my motherboard support ddr2 ram?

Nope, ur mobo doesnt support DDR2.

more the RAM speeed, the better it is. but the GBF doesnt allow ant increasing in speed, so u'll hafta stick by DDR400 :P
 
hey spyking!

I noticed in ur screenshot that ur ram is running at 159.6Mhz, I guess ur ram is a 333 Mhz one, so the best deal will be to return your existing 2*128Mb ram with ur dealer & buy a new 2*256Mb@400Mhiz(or better if budget permits to 2*512Mb). I guess u will get at least 1000 bucks by selling ur 2*128mb. In case u can't sell ur existing ram , u can get a 2*256Mb ram @ 333Mhz, u mite get the 333 Mhz for cheaper than 400 , as ur ram will be anyway limited to 333 Mhz owing to ur older ram.

As of brands u can go for Zion(uses Hynix chipset) if u r on a low budget, will cost arnd rs 2600(for 2*256Mb modules). If not available got for transcend or twinmos.

Check chennai computer parts prices here www.deltapage.com . Ebay generally sucks! Btw, Im from chennai too.

For about 4~5k for the RAM alone you should consider 2x512MB as they are quite cheap now and dont forget to get PC3200/DDR400 types. Avoid Hynix as most of the modules in the market are fakes.

No idea why you even thought about 2 x 256MB ! :huh:

RAM is pretty cheap these days - 2 x 512MB DDR400 would fit within your 4-5K budget perfectly! I recommend TwinMos as well, comes with a 3yr warranty just like Transcend.
 
My friend is offring to sell me his old RAM(512MB 330mhz) at 1.7k... He is not sure of the brand and says that its 3months old... I will post the brand name ASAP....

most prb will og for that and keep the old 256MB ram also..

Hi,
I faced the same problem upgrading my cousin's system - he has just 128MB DDR266. I checked the Intel web site, since I wanted to be sure the board operated in dual channel mode. Turns out there are only few "supported DIMM configurations", left me thoroughly confused. Check out : http://developer.intel.com/design/motherbd/bf/bf_mem.htm . Please let me know if the Transcend / TwinMos DDR400 memory available here works in dual channel mode.

U get new 512MB DDR400 for 2Kish...spend 300 more n get warranty :)
