My friend is offring to sell me his old RAM(512MB 330mhz) at 1.7k... He is not sure of the brand and says that its 3months old... I will post the brand name ASAP....

most prb will og for that and keep the old 256MB ram also..

Yep, Sunny is right, might as well spend 300 bucks more and get a new stick. Unless the brand he's offering is Transcend/TwinMos - which are marginally more expensive and come with a longer 3yr warranty.

However you will lose out tremendously on performance:

1. Memory will be running at 333Mhz versus the 400Mhz speed that your system is capable of.

2. Memory arranged in that format (512MB + 256MB) will not allow dual-channel memory access, further reducing performance.

Pentium 4's are highly dependant on memory bandwidth and considering you have a high-end P4 3Ghz w/ HT, you shouldnt compromise on the memory aspect of things.

Ok thanks!! I will chek and see where I get he cheapest twinmos RAM in chennai and get it soon...

Hehe... how easy is it to fix RAm-- I googled it and it seems simple.. but do i need to call a tech or an ido it my self??

PS I can handle tools and can solder prety well...

Spy king,
Please let me know if the 865GBF mobo operates in dual channel mode after you install the DIMMs.

Thanks.

UH????

I am running 2X128 now and the cpuz prg says dual channel mode enabled..

So my guess is that it is supported.. But what is DIMMS???

hope this helps!

EDIT I just reread this post

To make matters worse I came across this : "For Optimal Dual DDR400 memory mode 'Fully Loaded' (all banks populated) configurations can use either single or double sided DIMM's, however with 'Lightly Loaded' (single DIMM in each channel) configurations should use double sided DIMM's. " . From http://www.beyond3d.com/reviews/inte.../index.php?p=4 .

Help !!!

I dint understand a thing..:( I will most prb get more RAM this weekend and let u know.. will install and see what happens and report back:)

After you install the RAM modules ( DIMMs : Dual In-line Memory Module ), check if dual channel mode is enabled ( I think the BIOS will tell you that also ). Tell me what RAM you bought, I'll buy the same if dual channel mode is enabled. Thanks. The Intel website has me really confused, see my post on 21/10/2005.

Hello!!

I got my RAM-twinmos 512MB ddr pc32 400mhz:D Now i got a q... right now my budget alow me to get only this much.. but hopefulle I will get 2k 4 diwali and I can get hte second stick.

Now i got a Q.. is this stick enough or is it better to use the 2X128 sticks also??

those are 333???

as in will it be worth the drop of this 512Mb from 400 to 333 to get 256MB more???

Thanks!!

Ashwin:D

PS first time I have opened the cabinet and ac fiddld arnd:D was fun!!

Man this is soooo simple:D

Thanks agn TE!!!!

Hi!!

I have now put

1X512MB Twinmos DDR 400 on slot 1.

1X128mb DDR 333 on slot 2.

Slot 3 empty

1X138MB DDR 333 on slot 4.

System has got much fsater load times and I am verry happy:)

Using the 333 MHz sticks will reduce the spped of the TwinMOS. The TwinMOS will now be running at 333MHz only. When u buy the 2nd TwinMOS stick, ensure that u get one with the same memory chips so that u can run the sticks in dual-channel.
