My system has 2 GB DDR2 RAM installed as 1GB + 1GB in individual slots both @ speeds of 400MHz. There are two more empty slots and I want to increase the size of RAM from 2GB to 4 GB. Now please tell me whether I can straightaway put 2 GB RAM in one slot or I should put two 1GB DDR2 RAM in both slots.

Please guide. Also can DDR3 RAM can be used?

also will using a different company RAM be OK?can i use ddr3 RAM? is DDR2 RAM still available in market?

You cant use ddr3 & using 1gb or 2gb per slot will depend on your motherboard , check the manual , you can use any make , ddr2 is still available but is double the price of ddr3.

You can buy 2 gb single RAM stick, But be sure to purchaces 400MHz dual channel . You can use different company, that does not matter. You can not use ddr3 RAM. If you take a single 2 GB RAM stick then must use the DIMM slot No. 3. use you motherboard manual.

Does your motherboard support DDR3?? If not, then you will have to purchase a new mobo..

If you wish to continue with DDR2 then yes you can straight away add 2gb in one of the two vacant slots. But at present DDR2 ram cost almost double than DDR3. you get a 4gb DDR3 ram in cost of 2gb DDR2..

what is your mobo model no.

I do not think those motherboard who support ddr2 will support ddr3. So there is no question for ddr3 support.

yup my motherboard support ddr2 only. it is a narmada motherboard - HP pavilion dx2480 PC.

Why is that ddr2 is more expensive than ddr3 whereas ddr3 is new technology?

Because DDR2 RAM production is almost stopped. That's why sellers bump up prices of available RAM sticks.

Supply & demand, you see.

So you have Narmada TG33MK. i think this is the only model used in hp desktop.

friends I made a mistake, my earlier two rams were 800 MHz and 1 GB each now I have purchased one 667MHz RAM and other 800 MHz RAM, though the system is showing 4GB RAM and there is improvement also but i am worried if there is any issue with mixing channel speed, the shopkeep refused to take back the 667 mhz ram as he has maarked the date of purchase, i bought it for 650 only so if there is any probelm in mixing of speeds then i can go with 800mhz ram again and keep the 667 mhz piece as spare.

No problem as far as the system is running. Keep it. If the RAM would have been incompatible PC wouldn't have booted in first place.

my main concern is that will the slower speed i.e. 667Mhz appied to all rams or other three sticks will continue to wrok at 800Mhz?

^^^

that's why i am not feeling the speed even after having 4gb RAM. looks like i have to buy another 1gb 800mhz stick.
