Hello ppl,

I have a very old pc (celeron 300 MHz, 128 mb ram etc). Last week when I tried to boot it after ages, it failed to boot and gave constant short beep sounds with nothing coming on the monitor screen. I thought that theres some problem with the ram and got it checked but that also didnt help. Now I am thinking that instead of trying to get this monster repaired, I should upgrade and give it a new life.

My requirements are only net surfing and mild linux programming and small time games. Can you suggest me how to proceed with the upgrade. I am thinking that intel dual core E5200 will be more than enough for my needs but I am open to your thoughts.

I guess, just upgrading processor and ram will do at this point as I changed the cd rom and keyboard/mouse last year, so there wont be any problem with that.

Pls let me know what you guys think.

Regards.

bare minimum upgrades you would need is powersupply + ram + motherboard + processor.......all of these is a bit difficult in the 5k budget

psu : vip 400w : rs.600

processor : e5200 : rs.3500

motherboard : gigabyte g31m-sl : rs. 2350

ram : 2gb transend 800mhz : rs.1150

total : rs.7600

psu : vip 400w : rs.600

processor : amd x2 5200 : rs.2950

motherboard : gigabyte 6100 : rs. 2200

ram : 2gb transend 800mhz : rs.1150

total : rs.6900

other alternative, pick stuff from TE market

Replace the 5200 with a Celeron 1.8 GHZ for 1925
Reduce the RAM to 1 GB, nuff for casual computing on XP. for 600
total savings 550 + 1575 = 2125
7600 - 2125 = 5475/-

Replace the 5200 with a Sempron LE 1250 for 1550
Reduce the RAM to 1 GB, nuff for casual computing on XP. for 600
total savings 1400 + 550 = 1950
6900 - 1950 = 4950/-

Better suggestion.

^That PSU is nothing but a POS! You may never know when it might smoke the entire hardware. Bare minimum now is probably the newer Zebronics Pro 350W which retails for 1.5k odd.

I'd suggest the OP to take a look into the TE market section and pick some cheaper alternatives. net surfing and mild linux programming and small time games do not warrant a E5200 processor. The older Athlon X2 processors or even the Celeron D could handle those apps. :)

proccy : AMD x2 5200+ : rs.2950
MOBO : Gigabyte : M61PME-S2 : rs. 2200
PSU: vip 400w : rs.600(for this config this would suffice)
1Gb of RAM : 700....
Total:6450

@Gannu: well said.

In that case he can settle for the
zeb350 - INR 1500
Old A64 3000+ + Mobo + RAM - INR 3000
-----------------------------------------
Total 4500
If shipping needed then add another 300 bucks and he is good to go.

Are there cabinets which have in built PSUs ?? Sorry for the noob question but at the time of celeron 300 MHz only UPS and CVS were known terminology..!! Now it seems like the world has changed :)

The ones mentioned above are only SMPS (Power Supply Units).

You need these power your machine. Little has changed since the celeron days, only thing is now "we the people" are better informed than the ones selling us the stuff. :P
