Hey guys,

A little help needed from techgurus. Actually my Card idles at 54 and goes to 78 on load. So, i thought of replacing the stock thermal compound. Is it a viable option?

First of all, does removing the Stock Cooler from XFX 8600GT to apply Arctic Cooling MX2 and then fit it again void the warranty.

If it does not, how to do it and what would be the difference in temperatures?

Help appreciated from guys who have done such stuff.

Bye.

tempering ur card allways voids ur worrenty....only if they some how detect it...which is unlikely but possible.....coz i have successfully rma'ed 6600gt which died thanx to mouse in my house....who dared to piss on it...and my poor card died with a dent in it selfrespect:ashamed: ....and fault was mine coz i was out of station leaving my cabby open for 4 days!

Just dont remove any sticker etc, It will not void UR warranty, whats the proof that U openend card?? Nothing if U dont touch any label etc. Cant say anything abt difference, but have U tried increasing GPU fan speed with riva Tuner??? Side cabby fan always help man. 78C on load is nothing alarming, its normal range for GPUs.

Won't VGA Fan running at 100% damage the fan? I can try that using Riva Tuner but am not sure about the outcome.
And i already have a side fan blowing onto the card. When i load the overclock settings the load temperature goes up to 82C. Is it normal for 8600GT since 8600GT XXX Edition at stock does 80?

the temps are nothing to be alarmed about... mine did 95@load at stock settings coz it dont have a fan(gigabyte)

you can increase the fan speed in rivatuner...normally they dont run more than 50-60%

make it higher at load(3d settings)

the temps u mentiond is ideal for 8600gt...i heard tht xfx cards espg 86gt's r having heatin prob..
anywayzzz as punjab mentiond untill u tamper with the stickers they cant make out wether u removd heatsink.....u can go for a thermal compound swap...jus b careful u dun screw with any components while doin so....

78C on load is completely fine. but if you are not so comfortable with the temperature then you can apply some thermal compound. As long as you dont take off any stickers or leave any permanent mark, your warrenty will still be valid.

Thanks everyone for ur responses. But will running the fan at 100% during gaming damage the card subsequently.

Can i run the card at 82C while keeping it overclocked while playing games?

I am thinking of Arctic Cooling MX-2 but can anyone guide me how to open the heatsink & replace it without any damage coz i have never done that.

Some guys here have done it with the XFX 8600GT so can they please tell me or give a link to some guide on how to do it. Plz...

removing the cooler and changing the thermal paste is pretty easy...

1)take off the heatsink

it will be attached using screws or pushpins and comes off easy

what you should take care off is not to pull it off really hard as the thermal paste sort off sticks it to the gpu so try twisting it a bit while removing...dont pull straight off(atleast this happens with cpus)

2)clean off the thermal compound from the core.

you have to use alcohol or acetone to do this. Its available in any medical store and is called rubbing alcohol or sumthing(its there in another thread i think i read it somewhere). its the stuff used before applying an injection :D

3)apply the new thermal paste.

there are many ways to do this but i guess the best is to follow the instructions that come with the mx-2

4)put the heatsink back on

just check if the 8600gt cooler is meant to cool the ram also...if so then save the thermal tape on the ram chips

dude i own an xfx 8600gt gddr3 card..on stock clock rating ,using automatic fan control it idles at abt 45-47 centi and while playing games it goes up to abt 67 centi
xfx never had issues with over heating cards...they provide quality stock cooling...
i think ur cabby is to blame or ill placed fans...get a roomier cabby or try to attach side fans with proper in flow and outflow directions.

unless u prefer after market vga coolers which are wuite costly., he thermal compound will only lower ur temps by 5-7centi..

i see ur oced the thing to 650/1650 from its 540/1400...

ehe mine does 95degrees @ full load in summer but its passive cooled gigabyte

i dont think temperature is an issue but i guess lower temps==better life :D

throw some coolermaster paste onto it clown abhi

Ya, waiting for my Arctic Silver 5. They say AS5 reduces temp of 8600GTS by 10C on load and is better than MX-2. I am waiting to put this fact to test.

And i noticed one thing that cranking the resolutions higher in the games increases the temp. Coz every game like UT3 and Gears of War which i run at full settings heats up the card more than playing at medium at stock settings and 1024 res. Dat's why the 80+ on load when overclocked.

Did any one else experience the same?

Naturally. Since you're putting more load on the card. The core and memory are being fully utilised so there's more heat being produced.

use the fur benchmark to load the card for max temps....

and btw... i'm pretty sure mx-2 will be better than AS5 in any case

just check out the reviews

I used the Fur benchmark and it goes to 83 and stays at dat temperature.

I thought that MX-2 is better but see this review:
Bjorn3d.com -T.I.M. Shootout, Satisfying Your Daily Tech Cravings Since 1996

AS5 is better for VGA cards when compared to MX-2 by 2C and similarly MX-2 is better by 2C in CPU. So i have ordered one AS-5 from KMD coz anyway my CPU runs cool.:)

Sheesh....Rambling over a mere 2c difference in temps is foolishness. Go get urself a cheapo case fan and see the Load temps drop by atleast 6c.
