[quote name='clown_abhi']Hey guys,

A little help needed from techgurus. Actually my Card idles at 54 and goes to 78 on load. So, i thought of replacing the stock thermal compound. Is it a viable option?QUOTE]

hi guys

i am in the process of overclocking my XFX 8600GT Silent, i am flashing the bios on all by 10mhz at a time and it is going well. It idles at 46c and is at 56c at load all be it eve online. I will keep the updates coming on OC with stock cooler but i doubt it will be this way in the summer lol.

thnx Paul

dude looking by ur oc`s...and the fact dat its a silent cooled model...56c sounds amazingly low...u sure u didnt spalsh water on the card???:bleh:

haha lol

now it is idling at 49 and maxed out at 80c with card tester

its now at 680/1820/1415 shader but i think i will have to have some fan assistance when spring hits, it is not very warm in the flat i live in and it is sat in front of the window so it is getting plenty of cold air around it

Paul

I do plan to upgrade to core 2 duo in the future but at the mo i am happy with this rig playing STALKER n Call of Duty with the odd Racing game :cool2:

hmm well ive seen my xfx go to 69`c for most of the games dat i play and it idles at abt 46..

wrt to fatal1ty editions and zalman xxx ed`s they have slight advantage in the sense dat the ram chips get some of the air from the cooler and thus stay cooler dan the std naked ones...but for the for like 630/1600 over the 540/1400 ,the price diff aint justuified., i mean i can oc to those noob levels without even thinking...
but of late i`ve been thinking of getting some after market ram sinks to cool chips...

i've got a gigabyte which has higher default clocks compared to the standard one

default is 540/700/1200

mine is default at 600/720/1450

so it pawns most others without OC :D

but the thing is that it wont OC on the core one bit

not stable at even 620mhz core

the memory runs fine at 850mhz...havent gone higher yet

That sounds like a good plan, i just booted 10 mins ago and idle is now 46. I love Zalman products as they just rock i got flower on north bridge and i plan to go with one on CPU but only if i dont upgrade to core2 in the future and will deffo be looking for Zalman for GPU. I have gone back to 670/1800/1405 as i dont wanna push too hard just yet.

stay cool :hap2:

Hahaaaaa

Well after reading all posts on here i decided to stick some arctic silver on my card and i broke off one of the aluminium studs that hold the heatsink on lol, i did a DIY on it and im back on it again phew, alsi stuck another case fan in front of case to get more air from front to back and its now idling at 42c and maxed out 76 on stability test which is quite good lol

OMG i am not even a big overclocker anyway pmsl

Hey it's nice to see so many replies from a newbie. Dat's great. I used to be one someday. Overclocking's all over the post.:D

PoolDemon, 8600GT would benefit from more direct air cooling simply because it's passive and a stream of cool air over the already good heatsink would cool it more. :)

But the problem with active ones is the additional cool air does not do much of a difference. I applied AS5 and am using a inlet fan on the side but still on load it goes to like 80 and hovers around 78. When idle the temp are at 52 now. But see, no notable difference, ain't it?:(

What i am thinking is to let go, and if anything happens to the card, anyway i would be getting a replacement so why to worry.
Just keep fragging:ohyeah:

^^my passive one is idling at 50 now :D

with a 800mm fan attached onto it though (using zipties :D) the load temps dropped by a massive 30degrees :D

the gigabyte passive cooler is so large that it extends beyond the card

haha

love the posts in ere they're gr8 guys

i cant hear anything now as i have my zalman fan in the front on my case and the one i took off the dual fan psu is now connected again but the lead is long enuff to fix it in the back of the case

well besides the neighbours hearing what sounds like a party of women drying their hair together it is now idling at 43 and toca race driver cranked up to full (which is an old game that probably doesn't put much load on it anyway) the highest under load using nvtemplogger is 53 so it is still ok and i think the bolt fastenings have taken the heatsink down firmer on the gpu chip ( i took care not to over do it).

all i need now is another huge case fan and a couple of fan mates and i will be well happy no longer getting tinatus from the hair drying session that never stops as long as i am on pc lol

tc all and stay cool

p.s. does anyone know if nvtemplogger is reliable enough as a realtime guage?
