Beginner
whether to go for processor with more cores or with L3.

I was comparing few processors in AMD, and came up with these 2 below:

Phenom II X2 - 555 BE - Rs.5150
Athlon II X4 Quad X4 635 - Rs.5150

which is to be chosen among them ..

Is there any other processor in these price range .. either in Intel or AMD ..

I would go for the Quad-Core if I were you. The two extra cores does mean better performance. Phenom II X2 is good in gaming though but given the increase in no. of games supporting quad-cores the equation should change soon.

Was in the same dilemma 2 months back. Ended up choosing a 720 BE over the athlon quad core. Somehow, lack of L3 cache put me off from buying an athlon.

Depends on what you use the PC for.

In day-to-day use and general multitasking, the quad will feel zippier and more responsive. For gaming and some kinds of media work, the extra clock speed and cache of the dual core will beat out the quad.

I have a 620, a 240 and 550BE unlocked to tri-core (4th core is unstable). The 620 is the 24x7 download, browsing and general tasking rig, the 550 is used only for gaming. I had used the 550BE for sometime in my 24x7 rig, but it was much slower/laggy performance than the 9950BE that preceded it (same motherboard). Thus it got migrated to the gaming rig, where it came into its own.

I have seen many people experencing a slow performance in general usage. Can you elaborate? Is it multi-tasking or regular usage, because in regular usage I hardly notice any difference between a fast/slow dual core and a quad core.. In Windows XP even a single core works as expected in regular usage...

Given that regular usage for me involves a music program, a Chess game, my phone browser application, and at least four browser windows at one time, I'd say it mostly is multi-tasking ;)

There is a high chance of getting a X4 955 out of the X2 555, but it's a risk you have to take. Else, the X4 630 is a very sturdy processor.
