Help: Unable to install Win7 in my Sony VAIO

Hi All,

Facing a strange dilema.

I have a sony VAIO Model VGN CR34GN/B

This has Vista pre installed in it.

I got a windows 7 bootable DVD which I inserted but I don't get any prompts to install the OS
:@

I have taken care of making the optical drive as the primary boot device still no success.

Help guys; i just upgraded to 4gb just for win7 installation

Try booting the DVD in some other comp/laptop and see if it is detected.

If not OG then there is a possibility that the DVD might have got corrupt.

i tried using the dvd in other systems and it works fine.

Looks like the dvd rom itself is gone...Can i install using a USB dvdrom?

Yes, u can easily install OS from USb based devices, read all the instructions and prepare properly before starting and u will zoom smoothly. check if ur bios has usb bootability option.

Thanks guys...will try the above.

The issue is; looks like sony vaio doesn't allow me to install a new OS:( all it does is ask me to use a recovery disk but its not detectingmy dvd.

I have connected my DVD rom using a SATA-USB converter and now its just like a USB optical drive. the vaio has an option to boot from 'USB optical device' which is precisely what I am trying to do:(

Also if nothing works after you have attached the USB and are restarting the laptop, press F11 that will make it look for any bootable media and boot from it, I have a VAIO VPCEP, tell if you are still not able to get it to work

Rather than trying all this...

Just boot into your existing Win Vista... start the win 7 setup (either from DVD or from HDD) & simply select option to INSTALL FRESH and the existing vista would be replaced by Win 7... ( and vista moved to some Windows.old folder for user preference and files retrieval)

no need to have a bootable drive or anything... I always use this method if I have corrupted my windows 7 or upgrade any vista installation.

^@iq- that would not format the drive; so I am a bit wary and its would not be a fresh install.

Others...I tried the link given by Gannu dada and made the USB bootable stick. Success instantly:) Win 7 installed in 15 minutes. Thanks all.

I was afraid about driver support as the lappy was almost 2.5 years old but everything looks to be working fine. even the media control keys:)

Glad that the link worked. :)

I owe my gratitude to stalker who had told me about this utility sometime back. Been using it ever since then on my netbook and desktop.

^^And I owe u one for this. I am sure if it hadn't been for your suggestion...I would have tried the external dvd rom installation the whole night. And next day; heart broken would have taken it to the local mkt for installation:)
