I am looking for a used Wagon R.
Talked to this guy who is selling his 2004 Wagon R VXI which has done 23000Kms.
It seems that the car is in excellent condition, used occasionally by his wife. I have not seen the car as of now.

I have checked up carwale.com and a few other sites for the price evaluation. They quote anywhere between 1.8 to 2.15L depending on the condition of the car.
The owner says that True Value has estimated his car price to be 2.4L.

Now, I am little confused :S. Do you think he is lying about the True Value quote?
What do I do next to verify his claim?
What do you people think the value of the car should be?
PS: I am noob to cars, but I have been reading the Used car buying guide from team-bhp.com.
Thanks in advance

2.2 is the maximum you should offer and that too if it's in excellent condition . Else , 2-2.1 seems like a fair price . Also just 23000 k on the odo in so many years seems odd . Get it checked properly to ensure the odo hasn't been tampered with .

Thanks Manu. So, do you think this guy is lying about the True Value quote?

for true value you can input all the details and will let you know so if you have done your homework then i guess that guy is lying , do carry 1 print out of tru value quotes when you go to meet him next time and do get a proper checkup at some MASS before you say yes to the deal

First, True Value is foremost a dealer, and wont take at such high price. Owner is surely bluffing
6 years for 23000 Kms is very less. A infrequently used car is also not good (assuming odo is not tampered)

As other said, for 2004 model, anything from 1.9 to 2.1 is max, if the car is in really good shape
Check tyres, battery, insurance&claims, structure damage, service history, NCB, exterior damage ( scratches, dents)

Also, if there are any extra features present, like
ICE, Alloys, Sunfilms, Upgraded tyres, Leather seatcovers etc etc. All this will add to the price and to be taken into account

To guage odo tampering ( not the best method, but a good indicator)
If it has run only 23000 Kms, then tyres would not have been changed. Even if they were replaced, it would have been done recently.
So, check the tyre manufacturing date, if it something after 2004 and before 2009, then odo is tampered for sure

Don't agree with this part. There are people who have extremely low usage. My 2 wheeler, which is 5 years 11 months old, has 22K on the odo, and my car, 2.5 years old reads 7K on the odo. That's even lesser than the 23K posted here. And for the record, I use the car 6 days a week.

@spectre Thanks for the tips. I had gone through team-bhp's threads for used car buying tips. I have compiled a list and will be taking it with me. Since I am a newbie to cars, my friend will also be accompanying me. Will surely check for odometer tampering.

@agantuk - team-bhp guys do mention that old but low mileage cars might not be good if the car has been idle for long periods of time. According to the owner, that is not the case here. It seems usage was minimal, like dropping the kids off to school stuff driven by his wife.

He mentioned that he has a Blaupunkt system installed.

^ Agree about cars lying idle. But if the seller has genuinely used it sparingly, then it is indeed a very good deal. For instance, I use my car for the office round trip, which comes to a little less than 9 kms a day. Still the car is in great condition - touch wood.

A Simple Tip while buying a USED CAR :----

Never Ever purchase a used car which has been driven by a FEMALE. :-)

word. I have seen people advertise proudly, that its a 'lady driven car'
