Re: Hitachi makes most reliable Drives :Storelab, a Russian data recovery firm

Well, I had one hitachi 160GB SATA HD back in the day.

It still works fine in my friend's computer.

Well from my personal experience, the previous days HDD were good and had low failure rates of all the leading brands WD/segate/hitachi/samsung..., but with time as the demand for HDD have increase the failure rate have considerably increased.

Today you will find people with 4-5 years old WD/segate HDD working fine without any isue and you will also find people with 4-5 months (or even weeks) HDD going kaput.

God knows whats wrong with this manufactures. Instead of making better drives with the help of new tech, they are just selling craps

my old Samsung 80GB HDD lasted 5 years whereas i have already RMAed my 500GB WD twice :( .

About hitachi being the clear winner, i am not too sure as Emil had pointed out that we should also take into account the Volume of HDD floating in the market. I haven't seen any hitachi HDDs easily available in NP whereas every other street vendor has a Seagate HDD with him.

I've got 2-3 Hitachi HDD's and they're pretty okay. I was using one for downloads, and it's begun showing signs of premature aging. It's about 3-5 yrs old.

The other drives are working perfectly, though they are horribly slow.

I've had older seagates and sumsungs and didn't have any problems with them for more than 7 yrs, at which point they both died slow painful deaths.

I do think Hitachi's are reliable, but I'm not convinced they're more reliable than any other brand, eg seagate and western digital.

But I know they aren't fast, in fact I'm pretty sure they're about the slowest drive money can buy!

Buying any computer component is a bit of a gamble now-a-days. The only thing one can do is always back-up and try and always have a back-up!

i always keep the hdds actively cooled and ventilated and make sure they never cross 40c even in mumbai hottest times. also i never move them during operation.
generally they are around 32-35c.
Had no hdd fail on me in these conditions...can't really comment about durability since i dont have any hdd with me for more than 3yrs generally.
last hdd failure was seagate ST3500320AS which was anyways famous for faulty firmware.

i have never used hitachi.

Same for me as well. I have been using WD and Seagate drives and none of them have given up on me yet. Some have lasted for more than 3 years now and still at 100% health. :) Touchwood. Even the WD6400AAKS. Never used Hitachi.

It all matters how we handle the drives i guess and the cooling. You definitely need active cooling to increase the life span of a drive and proper care.

Somedays back i read an article which said that HDD have a mention of the maximum pressure they can handle (around 200G). Note that even a slight drop of 0.5 inch on ur computer table is a lot of pressure to damage the HDD mechanical parts. So always keep the HDD on foam when handling out of the case or swapping.

HDD fall is not that big an issue when heads are parked in the bay, its those little bumps while HDD is spinning or when heads are not parked coz the problem.

Wow... Am I lucky to have recently purchased a Hitachi X500 Portable?? ;)

BTW, Hitachi RMA is handled by HCL here in Mumbai atleast. And last time I contacted them, they responded within 24 hours and even went out to say that a bill was not required and I was just drop my ole HDD to a HCL service center and a new Drive would be shipped to me within 10 days!!

What do you use for cooling? Do you use hdd coolers like these eBay India: 3.5" DUAL FAN HARD DISK COOLER for desktop PC (item 170607925045 end time 03-Mar-2011 21:04:32 IST) , my cabinet 120 mm intake fan throws air at the hdd but it never goes below 40c during summers.

I would not suggest those coolers available on ebay as i believe will be vibration which will be directly transferred to ur HDD.

If the intake fan is slow, it will not provide sufficient airflow. Get a faster one between 80 - 110 cfm. Do you have proper exhaust from your case? Exhaust matters a lot for overall system temperature. Also, look at the positioning of the drive. Dont place it anywhere near a component which is constantly heated up like graphics cards, etc.

But that is if you don't have a bill. In case you do have a bill, there won't be any trouble. I have a bill for my X500.

^Even I have the bill, but, it mentions the drive name as Hitachi simpletough with no serial number.

Arre... Contact Letsbuy and tell them your problem. Even I had the same issue. I sent them an email and the next day, they emailed me another bill.

What's more, they even changed the bill date and the new bill date was the date on which they sent me the bill plus it had the Serial Number! :yahoo:

Do remember to mention that you want the Bill for Hitachi X500 Portable USB Hard Drive and also tell them your Serial Number.

Yep, already did. Got a affirmative reply with the new bill today wonly at around 7pm. My bill date is dated 5th march+ serial number (yep, I mentioned it in my email, I knew these twits would not ask for it themselves).
