Home Wifi solution

I got two in this sale and one is not working. There seems to be issue with wifi in the faulty one. clients are connecting only in 2.4G mode and that too only if the devices are kept next to each other. Other one seems to be fine! Raised replacement required in Amazon.
 
If you want a stable access point for life get a Ubiquiti access point. I have few of them and the only time I restart them when a firmware upgrade is needed. They don't come cheap though.

That is the point... They are not cheap and I'm not sure it's even worth to invest in such expensive devices any more considering we get almost similar experience in fraction of cost.

I use Google wifi mesh system and I don't remember when did I restart last. And I don't have any issues in scheduling auto restart at 3am in these cheap devices.

Generally, you dont get CAT5 - its CAT5e which is more than enough for Gigabit Ethernet. CAT6 is better, but does not mean you need it.

They do have some quirks, but work fine. We dont need to restart since the office is shut down for the night :)

If on a budget - just set up repeaters using TPLink or MI 3C routers. Just restart them occasionally, and they should be fine.

You want mesh - iBall is the cheapest. We use them and Deco's and they work fine.

If you can run an extra wire however, its the best.

However, in both cases, don't expect to get anything more than 30-50 mbps of speeds or even lesser.

You need to take into account that it was 2005. I am not sure if CAT 5e was widely available then.
 
The replacement i got seems to be fine. But another issue i noticed in the main node is, 5Ghz is kind of dead by the end of the day. It set to restart at 3am everyday, morning when I check most of the clients are connected to 5Ghz. But around evening by 7pm, all clients are moved to 2.4G band except one which is placed just next to the router with just 2cm gap. Two more clients are also sitting next to the router but with the distance of 20-30cm and these are shifted to 2.4G.

These symptoms are repetitive every day. I will wait for two more days and then shift child node to main, will test further.

Other owners can you please check this behavior?

BTW tenda app gives out details of band info(2.4 or 5) in the client list view itself where as in iball app, we had to check by selecting individual client.

No its not. I got my friend 3 cheap tp link routers at 900 each, flashed them to ddwrt and set them up across his space. They arent mesh but all his place has solid RELIABLE wifi with no bells or whistles, with a 100mbps cat6 backhaul for the traffic to the router. (enough for his 100mbps interenet line & phones/cameras).
THAT is expected behaviour from a cheap device. Otherwise its just a shit device, cheap or otherwise.

If you are looking for decent hardware, look at the routers at openwrt.org. They are value for money and you can flash openwrt on them. Don't go with these noname garbage iBall something.

lets talk wireless and mesh, no point discussing wifi extenders with cable backhaul.
 
I was thinking of getting iBall router as my existing TP-Link W8968 needs to be restarted no. of times a day.
However my ISP suggested not to go with iBall as they many complaints. Instead they suggested to go with Tenda as they provide awesome Value For Money.

What do you need it for? Do you need mesh? Id reccomend staying away from both.

R7800. One of the best workhorses I owned. Unfortunately got bricked, and Netgear had no replacement, thus exchanged with a r8000.
Not really liking it, so got an Orbi RBK50. Really good range. Using it with Jio gigabit

Both are too costly.
I had also purchased a Netgear R6350 some months back but didn't find time to install it. Now as my TP-Link router needed frequent restarts, so planned to use the R6350 instead. But I was surprised to see its not working well. My ISP has allocated a static IP to me. But after configuring it, many sites (like speedtest.net) are not accessible and many others (like flipkart, amazon, etc) wont render properly.
Went through all troubleshooting steps as asked by netgear support, but nothing helped. Finally they replaced the device with a new R6350 as well, but even the new one has the same issue.
But using the details provided by my ISP, my existing TP-Link router works perfectly. My ISP brought a tenda router to check, even that one worked fine. So, they suggested me to go with Tenda.
I am not sure what's the issue with Netgear. Now their L2 Support is looking into this and have asked me to wait for sometime.
