Weird comparison but here's the thing

Me & the lady currently have a 5 year old Corsa and a 2 year old Swift

The idea of getting a new vehicle recently bit me and I did a couple of test drives following the bug

Fiat Linea MJD and Petrol - Although the vehicle is pretty well built and handles beautifully, the petrol is underpowered (no improvement over my Corsa) while the diesel is a slight notch better although not by much

The new Honda City - Handles well, the engine is refined and fairly peppy (though I'd expect better from a claimed 116 bhp) but lacks the solid feel I have come to exect from my old Opel...it Feels somewhat flimsy like the swift... The ABS and airbags are a definite plus though...getting the new Honda City should acttually have been a no brainer but:::->

The Beast - Safari 2.2 - Now I absolutely loved this vehicle...

sluggish to start with but opens up after 2K rpm... handling is slushy at best...refinement is notches below the above two....

but , but....I have a feeling that my long lost wanderbug may return back if I get this beast

What is keeping me away though are the niggling issues that one keeps hearing about the Safari..also the fact that ABS is available only on the top end (packed with some silly stufff like DVD players etc that don't need, but which push its prices ~2.5 L above the variant I want)

How safe is it as a vehicle, especially on highways at speeds above 100...

Another thing that is pulling me towards the safari is that we plan to retain the Swift for some more time so we'd still have a city vehicle to travel around on weekends...

Although one of us will still need to take the Elephant to work during weekdays

The Safari gx launched recently with ABS and reverse sensors and some more goodies.

I would go for the Safari since you seem to have 2 city runabouts. Just my thoughts.

If your driving style is conservative you shouldn't have issues with safari. plus it has a fantastic rear seat.

or you might want to have a look at the scorpio.. have frequently seen them ripped on gq so i assume it has better handling :D (but not much else)

It you "want" a SUV consider a Safari. Otherwise a City. Also using Safari for a daily commute in crowded city and parking the same is not really comfortable.

I too am considering buying a new car but a small one. Thinking about a Swift Vxi, but at the same time considering a Getz Prime. A new one is costing close to 3.5Lac with the discounts.

buying a safari ( or any tata car for that matter) is like playing a lottery. there are significant chances to get a lemon. I took a gamble and bought a tata car, and i'm glad I won :D , but its still a significant risk.

One of the team bhp mods bought a safari, and its been grounded for weeks now , and a whole bunch of engineers flown in from pune have been swapping everything , and still coming up empty

My recommend - Try the verna

first I have a question before making any comment .

Do you want a mid size sedan or SUV ?

secondly, do you want diesel model or petrol one ?

haha, If I knew that, would I post this as a question?

You know how I drive Baatli

The scorpios have a tendency to turn turtle so I'd rather give it a skip

Thats' what I am worried about greenie

Thing is, the city doesn't seem like a worthy upgrade..It does offer me some benefits over my existing ride, but nothing substantial that would justify the added spend...

I suspect that my heart wants me to get the Safari and I want my mind to justify it :(

Well, this is where the problem lies .

It is you who will have to decide which car your like SUV or Sedan .

in sedan category from the above choices ,I will go with Honda .Since, boot space in Linea is terrible .

anyway .well ,If I have to go with the above choices I will select City .

From what i'd seen especially from the newer scorpios they have much less body roll compared to the safaris. the scorpios can stay at 160 and even manage to go aorund corners (not at that speed though )

PS: you dont have to buy VX if you want ABS/Airbags. a recent variant called the GX has been launched which is 1L more expensive , but gets ABS (no airbags), rear view camera + LCD in the IRVM, ORVM's with indicators and alloy wheels :)

Oh man..that's scary...

It's 2.2 L more :(

I don't need any of the other stupid stuff and 2.2 L is a bit too much for alloys and ABS

Bugger, I've made so much of fun of scorpio owners at work, that I'll get lynched if I get a scorpio

And for some reason, the scorpio does not evoke any desire to own it for me...

yeah ride is rubbish and insides are cramped as hell .. but you did ask about highway performance  safari looks somewhat ok and is definitely more comfy

SC, if you just want a ride to have some fun off the road, dump 2L on a good old jeep. either a plain MM540 or something that will be 100% functional, or one of those ricer SWB jeeps ( ricer because most of the available specimens are 2WD versions with Power steering which make the whole thing feel like a boat.

can't have 3 vehicles...

Also, a MM540 won't do me any good as I need my basic creature comforts (read good suspension + AC + power windows)

My primary motive here is this...

the vehicle should be comfortable enough for my daily work commutes, but should be capable enough of allowing me to take long road trips over bad to terrible roads (not that the Corsa doesnt handle that, just that i know it's undergoinga torture test --though the swift absolutely cannot)

In fact, Offroading isn't really high on my priority list...

a composed ride over terrible roads coupled with impeccable highway manners while retaining the capability to drive around in the city... all this in a package 10L or low...

Ah, if wishes were horses..though the safari is probably the only vehicle that comes close

Go td a Cedia . Not sure how the after sales service in chennai is though.

Lol...I'll borrow your Cedia next time I go to Kabini... Will drive the swift to bangalore and swap..let's see how it holds up :P

get a safari itself then. but with Chennai traffic it may become a pain driving something that big.
