What about verna automatic.. newly launched.

i have verna manual..power is above what this car can handle... 0% handling over 110-120 . but can go over to 140 without any worries..fastest pickup seen around.

p.s. talking abt diesel.

i was contemplating a Verna when it had just been launched

That video-gameish style steering is a big let down (which is also one of the reasons why I hate my Swift)

My primary motive here is this...
the vehicle should be comfortable enough for my daily work commutes, but should be capable enough of allowing me to take long road trips over bad to terrible roads (not that the Corsa doesnt handle that, just that i know it's undergoinga torture test --though the swift absolutely cannot)
In fact, Offroading isn't really high on my priority list...

a composed ride over terrible roads coupled with impeccable highway manners while retaining the capability to drive around in the city... all this in a package 10L or low...

why not a innova,my uncle was in a similar position except he migrated from a bmw 323ci(back in the US) to innova(part of the reason he is not sure whether he will continue to stay in india,so didnt want to invest in a premium car) and now that he has driven a innova,he nevers wants to go for a sedan again,if he goes back to US he is thinking of cayanne.
anyway he consider all the cars below 10lakh even though the safari had more leg room and overall space, handling, fit and finish is crap compared to innova, and scorpio has even less leg room ,to much body roll, but fit and finish IMO is better then safari.
and innova corners way better then safari and scorpio,in highways u feel more confident in overtaking even though u are in slight curve in high speeds,i have often seen scorpio and safari owners in highway trying to overtake each other and its looks scary seeing the body roll especialy scorpio.

i think ford fusion fits the requirement except the boot space

can't have 3 vehicles...

Also, a MM540 won't do me any good as I need my basic creature comforts (read good suspension + AC + power windows)

Ah, if wishes were horses..though the safari is probably the only vehicle that comes close
Lol...I'll borrow your Cedia next time I go to Kabini... Will drive the swift to bangalore and swap..let's see how it holds up :P

My dad was one of the early adopters of safari in Trivandrum..we used one for abt a year....

1. dad loved it...so did i... stole some drives without him knowing...fantastic seating...

long drives are heaven..

2. In city its a b**ch.... coz the ppl that used the first one will know..turbo lag...constant gear shifts... but the news ones are VASTLY improved...believe me..

My pick..

You live in chennai man... i suppose you may chuck one of the old mules..it be the corsa..if you are going to use the safari for the long runs...all family trips... GET IT...

But if its city drive...trust me...dont buy... get the city....

stay away from linea....needs to be better...

Given up my quest for now :(

Unfortunately, none of the vehicles within my budget seem to fit my needs except the perhaps the Innova

The Innova is a big NO from high command and even my heart isn't exactly jumping with joy at the prospect of buying one

Will continue to rent out self drive Innovas for long distance driving vacations for now till I can either up my budget or a better vehicle comes along

Also, I get to continue driving a maneuverable sedan in the city or for a Chennai-Bangalore/Pondicherry run

while get to use a sensible MUV for those long distance + bad road vacations

at 2 driving vacations for a week each a year, it works out substantially cheaper too (2500 a day X7X2 = 35000 per year) compared to the cost of selling my car and replacing it with a MUV/SUV

hey supercarz why can u get m&m Scorpio black hawk very powerful engine or the new model don't remember :P

if u like petrol suv then safari petrol version has or Chevrolet Optra SRV

or Captiva cost upto 8-13 lakh

cause i hear diesel has turbo inter cooler (TDI) problem cause if u done upto 20k to 40k km while press high rppm acceleration cause it does not run very fast usign high rrpm cause of crack down reduce the life cycle low speed and rppm then it might done and not working

for replacment part under warrtny it cost upto 60k to 1.5 lakn

for new part TDI depend on any model if u are buying safari or innova

cause at hyundai service center where they replacement tdi for accent cost 54k cheap

and verna 74k

also tuscon & Electra 77k

and sonata embera 89 k

Im surprised you liked the handling of the city, I felt the exact same thing about that. I feel you should consider the Ford Fiesta. Its got unbelievable suspension on bad roads, and although i havent taken her on the highway yet, the fiesta is known for her high speed road manners. Even in-city driving you feel super connected to the road.

Seriously, take a test drive.

Weird comparison but here's the thing
Me & the lady currently have a 5 year old Corsa and a 2 year old Swift

The idea of getting a new vehicle recently bit me and I did a couple of test drives following the bug

Fiat Linea MJD and Petrol - Although the vehicle is pretty well built and handles beautifully, the petrol is underpowered (no improvement over my Corsa) while the diesel is a slight notch better although not by much

The new Honda City - Handles well, the engine is refined and fairly peppy (though I'd expect better from a claimed 116 bhp) but lacks the solid feel I have come to exect from my old Opel...it Feels somewhat flimsy like the swift... The ABS and airbags are a definite plus though...getting the new Honda City should acttually have been a no brainer but:::->

The Beast - Safari 2.2 - Now I absolutely loved this vehicle...
sluggish to start with but opens up after 2K rpm... handling is slushy at best...refinement is notches below the above two....

but , but....I have a feeling that my long lost wanderbug may return back if I get this beast
What is keeping me away though are the niggling issues that one keeps hearing about the Safari..also the fact that ABS is available only on the top end (packed with some silly stufff like DVD players etc that don't need, but which push its prices ~2.5 L above the variant I want)
How safe is it as a vehicle, especially on highways at speeds above 100...
Another thing that is pulling me towards the safari is that we plan to retain the Swift for some more time so we'd still have a city vehicle to travel around on weekends...
Although one of us will still need to take the Elephant to work during weekdays
Wrong bladey, between 2 cities on a highway the Safari is the last thing you need especially at higher speeds. It has too much chassis roll at higher speeds and steers like an elephant. Although its comfy for the family its not so for the driver, its fatiguing for longer distances. Also top-end variant not worth it.

Linea nice, true beauty.

Corolla good, goes good too but boring.

Economy = Hyundai Elantra and if you have the bucks Skoda Laura. Both these diesels are good power plants and pretty refined, also economical.

Petrol, I'd go with a Civic or the Corolla. Honda City build no longer impressive although the new engine has good on paper specs in reality does not feel so.

Crazy speeds? - Check for Octavia RS - comfy and fast, I own one.

vRS and elantra aren't available any more. Both are excellent cars to drive - the vRS especially so. However, considering the number of folks on tbhp crying about vRS problems and astronomical spare part prices, I'd not touch a used one with a barge pole. The elantra is okay - especially when peted. Spares are cheap and service is decent. However finding a good used example without umpteen miles on the odo will be a major pain.

Skoda Laura is the exact opposite of economical - parts keep failing every other day and cost a bomb to replace. Plus the legendary skoda service will take you for a real ride.

@Amey: The getz crdi is amazing in a straight line however it understeers really bad around corners. Plus completely dead steering feel. You own a swift. Didn't you feel so?

The Getz is going to be a city car :)
When i am in the mood for cornering, Swift is there :P

LOL, when did I ever say that
Although the new Honda City handles better than the Verna though nowhere close to the Fiesta

Hench proved. :P
But if you want an extended-ish test drive of the fiesta, feel free to drop in on a sunday. Got the diesel though.
