Guys,

All vista users, please give your honest opinions, which OS you feel is better for gaming ATM - Vista Sp1 or XP SP3

All of you would have been on XP before, so you guys would be the best to judge

When Vista was released, it was pretty bad for gaming mainly due to requirements, but now most PC have a good enough config and decent RAMs
Also i heard, SP1 did a world of good for Vista

Currently on AMDX2 with 2GB RAM, planning for Core2Duo with 4GB RAM.
I am concerned only for gaming performance.

Cheers for your replies

I completed orange box, crysis, assasin's creed, call of duty 4, call of duty 2, medal of honor air borne, and few more on vista sp1. (all except crysis with full settings.) never faced any issue with any game (except crysis, somehow crysis hates ati).

Even i'm using Vista....found it better than XP but frankly i havent used XP on my new system...but i still like vista n dont feel like reverting back to XP

Talking of FPS, according to the bechmarks on most sites, i think XP did better.
But then, on the newer hardware and games, with XP, you will not be able enjoy the DX 10 effects and quality.

Its like investing in the past or in the future, and for the value for money, i would suggest the future.

Also, does quality get included in your performany meter?

^The main reason for me to go for vista was my gfx card. it supports directx 10.1.

^^like above, if u want quality (DX10) and have the hardware, Vista. On second thoughts, even if u don't want quality but have the hardware, go Vista.

doh i voted for XP before reading the thread. crysis (demo) FPS dropped from 25-30 in XP down to 10-15 in vista for me... gotta read that crysis thread and do some tweaking i guess...

Thanks guys for all your views....Looks like Vista has a big majority :)

In Vista, does a 2GB to 4GB RAM transition give a big performance bonus or there is not much difference to be felt?

Also which version of Vista - X64/X86 would be better for gaming performance wise

i vote for vista because i think the gaming experience is better than xp

sure ur max FPS wont touch those u got in xp but in xp i always experienced frame drops in many games the FPS used to drop below 20 which was really annoying and in vista it seems like i get the same FPS through out the game no FPS drops

Difference between 2 n 4 GB wont be a big performance bonus expect while gaming or using RAM intensive apps. During the normal course of use, it will be much more responsive though.
For gaming, x64 should be a better bet. Infact, for everyday use too, x64 looks like the way to go.

You will also be able to squeeze the complete juice out of you 4GB RAM.

Yeah I don't why people complain so much about Vista, I've owned it for months now without a problem. Although I don't see what's so great it has over XP, but it hasn't crapped up for me so far.
