I am looking to supplement my measly 80GB HDD.

Whats the best value for money size category I should be looking at right about now. 320 GB, 500 GB or 640 GB?
Which of the three have a better Paisa per MB ratio?

My main storage need is for all the photos and videos I take. I dont really need speed. Should I go for a 32MB buffer or 16MB?

Which brand/line should I be looking at. Samsung/ Western Digital/ Seagate?
Are these "green" lines worth the premium they demand. Do they actually result in any real energy savings?

My budget varies between 3-5K.

In continuation to the question,

After I get the new HDD should I:
a> Remove the Old HDD and use it as portable storage. Keeping it inside will only hamper airflow.
b> Retain both drives internally.

Hi Shaunak. Go for the 1TB WD Green EADS (32MB buffer) drive. Looking at ur needs, that wud be most suitable. Its silent and consumes less power than most other drives (if not all) in its category hence the Green branding in its name. Its also reasonable fast too. I bought one here at Hyd for 4.8K. Alternately u cud go for a Seagate 1TB 7200.12 series (dunno the exact model) 32MB buffer model but Seagate's come with only with 3 yrs warranty while WD's come with 5 yrs wrrnty if im correct.

I have decided to go for a 640GB WD one.

Which one to choose?
* WD6400AACS. [Green one]
* WD6400AAKS [Blue one, SE16]

I believe the green is a bit slower but runs a lot cooler. That would be a big plus for me, because my system stays on 24x7.

Go green then?

About my old drive, I am going to make it an external drive. How much does an 3.5" enclousere cost?

Go with WD6400AAKS, its faster and currently available at good price. No problem even if you have 24x7 system, go for it.

Yeah get the 640AAKS, this drive is insanely fast. I have 2 of these 640GB AAKS drives in my rig along with a 500GB AAKS and the 1TB Cavier Black Edition. The 640GB AAKS are the fastest of the lot.

I would have gone to buy one today, but I got bogged down by the rains. Drizzels actually, but I thought it would rain. Natural mistake, the met dept does it everytime. :P

Anyway, back to the topic. There are some posts on the board about bad sectors and bad WD RMA. Can anybody confirm/deny this?
(RMA is important to me coz I have pathetic luck with hardware! :D)
If bad sectors are a known problem with WD, I wouldnt mind seagate either.

The question of my old drive still remains. What to do with it? Its a Samsung 80GB 7200 drive. Do I leave it inside as a backup drive (and let it heat my system up :)) or do I convert it to external storage?

BAd sectors are not exclusive to WD. They occur in both Seagate and WD. Also both Seagate and WD are known to have good RMA records.
