Go to control panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Audio tab. If it says "Realtek", then its onboard audio. If it says something else, it must be a sound card.

There might be other onboard solutions apart from realtek. Not sure of that.

If its in built with your mobo .. then Bios should give you info about the card..

if not then look at the sound card .. there must be some thing visible to identify what card is it. model/serial or anything as such.

u can also check to see if there are two audio jacks on the back panel - one green and one red (this is common in comps nowdays, but in old comps it was just 2 silver audio jacks)

check ur mobo manual for the sound chipset used if u have onboard sound.

^^ Yup, that is the best way to find out if you have a onboard sound card or a PCI card.

Look at the rear panel, if the audio jacks are near the USB, VGA, PS/2 ports, then you have onboard sound.
