hi guys

i have always used K-lite media codec pack. tried vlc few times.....but could never understand why people call it the best video player....

it has two advantages in my point of view:

- whole set of advanced options...

- multi-platform support.....windows, mac, linux, unix, bsd.....

but so many cons.....

it doesn't play real media even if you have codecs installed....

it doesn't play quick time videos (please correct me on this if i am wrong)....

it doesn't stream video (may be wrong on this).....

you can't see flash videos by reversing or forwarding....video stops that moment only...

it doesn't show controls in full screen....

may be even more disadvantages.....

While K-lite Mega Codec Pack plays virtually all video formats you can imagine.....one con which people say that it really looks primitive.....i agree on this...but till the time its playing any video i throw on it, no one must be complaining on the way it looks....

what do u say guys....

(Note : please tell about any other video player you think is better than all the options in poll)

KMPlayer FTW, dunno abt above I hardly use features which U miss in VLC. K-lite has its own flaws, broken codecs etc, poor interface. Out of above, I like GOM player.

but these feature are quite basic...full screen controls while watching videos....what about so many streaming real media on web....and the flash videos downloaded from youtube...

any vlc lover.....some clearance here....

vlc player alows you to choose the video and audio tracks from the current file. eg some movie files comes with multilangauge dialogs.
I always first try a movie in KLC, coz it has better controls for frame size and Location.

well this audio and video track selection is there in K-lite and easily accessible from right click menu as in vlc....

i am really curious to know that how come vlc has such die hard fans (not you ) even after all these demerits.....(as i have observed in various forums)

Simple. It's a no fuss player. All the other players you state, you need to install codecs. It's not my primary player, but I have in on my system. There are numerous ocassion when files haven't played on my primary players and I tried VLC and it worked.

And it's always useful to have the no install version on your pen drive. Any system you are at, 90% of the files just work. No installing codec packs, nothing.

Well Klite is a codec pack which comes with media player classic and VLC is a standalone player so you really cant compare the two...

MPC is my pick. MPC theme change issue is also fixed.
And K-Lite totally messed up my codecs, install's all kinds of unnecessary shit.

VLC can stream videos.

ok so lets say you have all codecs installed in your system....

then what do you say about vlc playback capability....why not real media and quicktime playback...why no forwarding in flash videos....

i didn't mean to make it k-lite vs vlc thread (though it seems that i have inadvertently made it so).....rather i wanted to know what are the great features in vlc that make it so popular ? and what about cons of vlc i listed (even without any comparison to other players ) ?

you have the option of installing only the codecs you wish during installation of K-lite...

I like VLC on my Mac, although I mostly use MovieTime (for supported formats). VLC is used only for unsupported format in quicktime (very rare case) and as a region-free dvd player.

I hate VLC on windows... one for the lack of controls in fullscreen (FS controls are available on mac, not sure why it's not so on windows), and secondly... MPC + FFDShow (if you don't want multiple different codec junk installed) easily rules out any codec pack out there, mostly.

OT: i have klite and mpc installed (with real alternative and quicktime alternative). so essentially the quick time codecs do exist on my comp, but embedded quicktime video on web pages dont load in firefox and it says i need to install quicktime. is there any way around this other than installing quicktime?

VLC is IMO as good as Classic Media Player.

Some movies look good in VLC some look good in CMP. IMO you install both and use whatever you feel like. Some codecs/movies dont play in MCP so u have VLC for rescue.

I install VLC/CMP and WINAMP, i never associate any files with these softwares (while installing these)

Always use "OPEN WITH".

Cheers.

KM Player is without a doubt the ultimate player available. So far it has played everything which I have thrown at it. The best part about it is that unlike wmp its not a resource hog. The looks are clean and slick too. Do yourself a favor and download KM asap instead of wasting your time on this thread.

Well VLC sucks.

Use KMPlayer.

Don't ever compare codec packs to all-in-one media player(like vlc/kmplayer which comes with its own internal codecs to play ur files). MPC may not be the best looking player but its very efficient and when installed with right codecs will play your files :)

KM Player is my video player of choice as well - multi-format support, clean looks, skinning support, advanced options - its got them all.

However i can understand why some people like VLC - there have been one or two occasions when a video that didn't play in KMP worked in VLC. Also VLC is my player of choice on the MAC platform - it plays everything, looks good and has full screen controls as well. Wonder why they can't implement the same in windows.

Bluffmaster, I have to disagree on WMP being a resource hog -_-

Here is resource usage for WMP11 while playing a 1080P vid :-

WMP11 When Idle :-

KMplayer playing the same file :-

apparently it uses more resources than WMP11!

KMplayer Idle :-

yeah i know the pics are large, sorry about that. i dunno how to make them smaller, they get blurry if i reduce quality.

For me 'WMP11 + cccp + Real alt + Qtlite' has been an ultimate combo, almost everything plays in WMP. Even in Firefox Real media and Quicktime streams play flawlessly.

I especially like WMP11 library management, it fetches the Album art and metadata stuff from the internet automatically, no other media player that i've tried comes anywhere close to WMP in this.

First of all k-lite codec pack is not a media player but just a codec pack.So comparing k-lite and vlc is like comparing apples to oranges.

Vlc is a standalone media player that doesn't use any outside codecs. It only makes use of those codecs that come with it.

The reason most people like vlc player is that it's no-frills player that plays most of the videos out there whithout any need to install any additional codecs or make any complicated changes to the player settings.besides it does a good job with most videos.
Sure there are flaws with vlc player. It doesn't play 1080p videos smoothly,no forwarding in flash videos, etc, etc. So what? Just use other players to play these files.

I use a combi of vlc player and MPC HC along with cccp and this setup plays all videos without any issues.KM player is good but the problem is it got too many features....features you won't need most of the time.Unless you watch those anime shows coming otta japan(In that case those additional features in KM player become useful).other than that KM Player offers you no real advantage over other players. Most of the useful features that you need are also available in other players.

And those who belive KM player offerws superior video quality are just imagining things.Jusrt play ard. with settings and you will get more or less same quality with most of the players out there.
Somebody asked how to play embedded quicktime video on web pages.Install qtlite to play these embedded QT vids and to play real videos install real alternative lite.

For me VLC +mpc(or MPC HC)+ cccp + Real alt + Qtlite has played everything i have ever thrown at it. If your system si a bit slow also install and enable coreavc. But some say playback using coreavc degrades video quality. Also WMV HD files are best handled by windows media player 11. And like the guy above said, WMP does have the ability to fetch the Album art and metadata stuff from the internet automatically. That's a really cool feature i like. WMP is a bit like picasa. It doesn't do a whole lotta things but it's a good library management tool with sleek interface.

Note of Advice to newbies here:- don't install too many codecs or media players. It will screw up your video playback.
