How can VLC be better than K-lite ?

Wrong place to post this but I've always wondered why VLC lags when skipping ahead with HD video content. Sometimes the screen will black out, sometimes the movie freezes although the timer is still moving. It takes longer for some movies than others to finally start playing properly. Its not like the players hung, but something like its having a seek problem. Why is this?

Reps to the first guy with a proper answer!

I use K-Lite Mega Codec pack and it plays rm and qt files too. I keep switching between WMP and MPC according to what I feel like using. WMP is better as it integrates with Vista better.

In the last 6months I have hardly had any occasion to open vlc at all, although I keep it installed and updated always.

LOL ..... ALL are the same.

Every software has its + n -- . WMP11 has good skin ,while VLC can stream video on your network.blah blah.

I personally use GOM only because it looks COOL.(for video song, low bitrate videos and divx movies)

POWERDVD (for HD and orginal DVD movies.)also the sound quality is better on it with my M-audio revo.

too much of CODECS do screw your video playback.

Preference-->Advanced-->increase priority of the process..
That should remove most of the problems,

Also, see if any other process is using the Harddisk simultaneously..

I have only noticed this on 1080p files.VLC doesn't lag when skipping ahead with 720p vids.

Anyway you could try this:-

Goto preferences ---Input/Codec------FFmpeg------Put the "skip-filter for H264" to all. Save this config. and restart VLC.

Could also try increasing the priority of the process through advanced tab(Well, this never made any diff. in my case).

Also check out one of the nightly builds of VLC.

VLC Media Player nightly builds

The problem will still be there but hopefully will be less pronounced. As to why this happens i have no idea--- some kinda buffer issue ??

I forgot to mention, i also use WMP 11 for ripping Audio CDs 'coz it automatically finds the name of songs etc for you and rips it. I know Winamp also does that but i compared quality of MP3s after ripping (from original cds) and somehow WMP 11 has best quality. ( I could be wrong or there might be something better)
So a combination of:
1) Classic Media Player (I select all codecs everything possible while installing)
2) VLC (if ever any player fails to play something) I dont VLCs interface, it is not responsive enough.
3) Winamp ('cox it is very respsonsive, best when it comes to check songs, i sometimes listen to various tracks rapidly, so winamp is fastest, never hangs etc)
4) WMP11 (Ripping)

I have the default player as Classic media player. I never associate anything else with my media. Prefer to use "Open with" mostly.

Will try tonight. Reps to you if this works :) and thanks!

My vote for MPC..:ohyeah:
VLC is better in the sense that it comes with integrated codecs & interface luks sexier over others..
ffdshow + H.264 + MPEG2 + PP + Scaling + other filters are brilliant in MPC/K-lite..
:)

MPC + CCCP + CoreAVC + Real & Quicktime Alternative

Has the Obsessive Compulsive Stamp of Approval for the cleanest possible media package :P.

I agree.... You can't compare them, K-lite is codec pack and vlc is a media player.....

I am not sure you understand the difference..... There is no valid comparison since k-lite only incorporates codecs, directshow filters and utilities made by other people. The only thing they actually make is the .exe file and scripts that install the codecs they have chosen to use from other companies. VLC is an open source project produced by the hard work and programming skills of individuals.

It would make more accurate sense to say that you can install k-lite to make sure you have all the codecs you need, then install VLC which will make use of the codecs and direct show filters that are installed with k-lite.

Also vlc is very good for unfinished movies that are being downloaded as it will still playback the finished parts so you can check the movie quality or other things you may be looking for such as sound quality or dubbing or hard coded subs without having to get the whole file.. Most other players won't do this... it will also play .bin or .dat files... so you don't have to burn or mount a .bin .dat movie to play it back.

Of course it can be used to stream, it is one of the main features it possesses.

I used k-lite for ages, and recently decided to install codecs as needed... I use ffdshow which can play these codecs by itself

DivX, XviD, H.264, FLV1, WMV, MPEG-1 and MPEG-2, MPEG-4

then I install separate codecs as needed. Less hassels.. though I have to admit I do also download gspot which comes with k-lite, as it is a useful utility. :D

KM Player ftw. Period. Plays everything I throw at it and has more than enough advanced options as well.

I would vote KMP over VLC too, except for .h264 files, which plays on the VLC better on my comp. I tried Klite codec and MPC but never was used to it.. The keyboard shortcuts in KMP rock...

Windows media player is a bloatware, cant really un-install it
