Sometimes the screen will black out, sometimes the movie freezes although the timer is still moving. It takes longer for some movies than others to finally start playing properly. Its not like the players hung, but something like its having a seek problem. Why is this?

Anyway you could try this:-
Goto preferences ---Input/Codec------FFmpeg------Put the "skip-filter for H264" to all. Save this config. and restart VLC.
Could also try increasing the priority of the process through advanced tab(Well, this never made any diff. in my case).
Also check out one of the nightly builds of VLC.
VLC Media Player nightly builds
The problem will still be there but hopefully will be less pronounced. As to why this happens i have no idea--- some kinda buffer issue ??
