You know that I know that :P But my question is about 1080p TVs.

On Tv's they should look fine depending on the distance.

720p games on a 42" @4-5 ft, and on a 73" @ 7-8 ft look fine to me

LOL. Only 15" monitors have 1280x720(720P) native resolution and who really wants to watch HD movies on 15" eh? As for games@720p on a 1080P screen, its not gonna be nice :P but you just sit back and enjoy the damn game on a biggie screen(24" FHD) :ohyeah:

What are you talking about? I am asking about FHD TVs, where do 15" monitors come in? :S

Well wouldnt the game look a bit awkward, like stretched or something

Why?? Its the same aspect ratio.

That's what I think as well. :)

They look just fine, via both the PS3 and the PC (on a DVI-HDMI cable). Of course, a distance <3 feet will look bloody pixelated, but as Shripad pointed out, if you're sitting a fair (5-7') distance away, it's all good.

Thats a big relief. :) I was getting confused trying to balance all the variables :P

If I only wanted to watch movies, I would have gone for the 42" Panny plasma. If games were my only concern, I would have taken the 32" panny LCD. But add PC usage to the equation, and FHD becomes a necessity. Now, keeping in mind the large size requrements for movies, we're looking at a 40 incher. This costs around 25k more than the 32" lcd :O If we are to play at full rez, add another 10K for the beefier gfx card :(

But playing at 720p would be a breeze for any 5-6k card :D This simplifies matters a whole lot :hap2:

Another thing to keep in mind is that not all games support the 16:9 aspect ratios on TVs. 1920x1200 is fairly well-supported but not 1920x1080, which may lead to horizontally squished images or black bars on the sides, take your pick. Similar for 1280x800 and 1280x720. Up until recently, the NFS series didn't support any widescreen resolutions without hacks. You need to look for specific support at the widescreen gaming forums to see whether the games you intend to play supports those specific resolutions. Where hacks are required to get the right resolutions working, you may also need to change the FOV for the game to 'look' correct, wider resolutions requiring wider FOVs.

Essential Games List - WSGFWiki

That said, I don't think you'll have any problems with scaling games to the full panel size anyway, as you'd be sitting at a reasonable distance from the panel if it's set up as a TV (assuming). I've scaled games from half size and it looks a little blurry but not too bad. Text, as Shripad mentioned earlier, looks horrible when scaled like that but games and videos are just fine even at normal screen distances.

Yeah but the same is not the case with games.
Try running a game at 720p when you have 19"WS. It will look utter crap.
ultimabasher said:
IMHO It will look bad.
Why take chances when just 2 - 3k more in a good card can help you easily own games at native reso of the LCD

Oh yeah?? :S
Sorry i couldn't extrapolate much from the one-liners. :ashamed:
Now it's a bit more clear though. :)

Hmm everybody above me are saying anything non-native res will look "baad" on a proper LCD monitor which is absolutely right... But I dont think anyone's gonna be enjoy watching 720P HD rips on a 15" WS(which has 720P res of 1280x720) cause 15" is too small . Plus 720P is not gonna look bad on a bigger monitor like a 1440x900 19" . There's even an argument that 1080P and 720P doesn't make much of a difference between a 1440x900(19") and a 1650x1080(22") . Games should look okay if the scaling's good on the monitor :P and the distance as per the gurus've posted :hap2:

Forget about the resolutions and get what you want :ohyeah: :P

Was this supposed to be helpful? If you read the only 3 posts which were informative, it seems games in 720 would do just fine on an 1080 TV. There might be some problems with games which don't support 16:9.
