ok

u u kno the cheap kind of goo thats available in white packet for 10 bucks a pop

i wanna apply that on to the core

now the thing is....and i m only guessing abt the arctic silver comparisions....this is really thin compared to AS...as when i put a small amount of it on the core....then try spreading using the drivers license...it well...the end result is that it spreads unevenly (in terms of thckness)...someplaces it is really thin....i can see the core....someplaces i cant see the core...

and now...the q's

1. m i doin something wrong??

2. will it work if i apply using a razer blade??

3. is this goo any good??? not as good as AS i kno...but any good??

4. some other goo u guys kno off...that doesnt hit me by 400 bucks or so

5. after applying...shld the core be visible, barely visible, not visible??? thats in term of this goo....as seeing the pics from AS i see that the answer to q. no. 5 for AS wld be not visible

reply ppl reply :D

Goo.. lol in gujarati Goo=Poop.. Goo lagi che means i wana poop

apart from joke..
i apply that goo with my fingers after dropping 2-3 poops on proc.. and if the levelling is uneven then i use Westside club membership card cause i dont have guts to use other cards ;)

^^^ c i tried to do the finger thing....but all the finger prints....and i think that due to applying so much of it....(cause had to use fingers) made it a loct thicker then it sld have been

abt the card thing....thats wat i m askin...after u do the card thing...is the goo evenly spread (in terms of thickness) 5...cause mine....was thin....core visible....and uneven

rio....man how evenly....thick....thin...core can be seen...core cant be seen...core can almost not be seen

why on earth will u need to use that "goo" at all. Use the stock thermal pads which will atleast be better than that toothpaste. or else order an AS5 tube, its so easily available nowadays.

thermal pad....it well kinda got used up...old proccy man...

AS5....dont wanna spend so much cash right now on something like that....dont plan on oc'in or anything...and 3-4 degree diff is not a issue for me

thin so as to almost not see the core... that should do...
even slightly thicker is not bad...

its just when its over done its a problem... other wise u should be fine...
and i suggest u just put a few drops of poop on the proccy and proceed with the card thingy .. no finger.. it gets really messy wit that... just use the card and spread AS EVENLY AS POSSIBLE... its like applyin butter to bread... u wouldnt want there to be more butter on one side and alomst no butter on other side...;-) best way i could put it across...

anyways try it out and let us know...

The way I do it and which seems to work fine (as my CPU temps are pretty low) is to put compound the size of a grain of rice (quoting Artic Silver) in the centre of the CPU and then I place the heat sink over it and then twist the heat sink only a few degress left and right - this twisting of a few degrees seems to spread the compund evenly across the CPU top. It is not necessary to twist more then a few degrees and no need to apply pressue - the weight of the heat sink is enough force. Every time I have removed the heat sink I have seen a very even spread of compund. This works for me.

How NOT to do it ... :O

I watched the video - a few points...

Before using the Alcohol it is a good idea to clean the contact surfaces with Acetone.

I have followed the exact same method shown in the video of applying and wiping off the compound from the bottom of the heat sink - including the finger in the plastic bag :) - this fills in compound into the microscopic pits on the heat sinks surface.

The spreading of heat sink compound with a credit card is fine for the older AMD CPU's but with the IHS topped AMD/Intel CPU's only placing a rice grain sized drop of the compound in the centre of the IHS and a little twisting of heat sink after making contact is all that is required.

Just my 2 paisa of info.....

there is no need to spread it at all. Place a drop, Elongated drop in case of Core2Duo's & then press n twist heatsink to spread it.

Not completely OT..

but nevertheless.... Are Thermal compound cleaners avble in India at all?

Any ideas on their prices?

OR

Are there any cheaper alternatives?

The best cleaner for thermal compund is Acetone and the best cleaner to get Acetone off the CPU and Heat Sink is Isopropyl Alcohol :)

If you have spare cash then I think Prime ABGB has the Artic Cleaner cleaning solutions which are probably nothing else but Acetone and Isopropyl Alcohol sold at premium prices.

y do u need to revove acetone using isopropyl....i thot acetone evaporates quickly na....

btw....i got it done finally...some hacking and it seems ok now...seems to be running ok

Ah.. Thanx for the insight..
But where do I go about asking for acetone and isopropyl alcohol?? :S

Ask Freaky of TE.... he bought some in Chennai a while back. Possibly even Saiyan may know the Chennai source.

@deepak.... I mentioned this thing about Acetone to be removed wirh Isoprpyl after reading it in the Artic Silver pages. It was somewthing to do with Acetone being a strong solvent and it is not good to have on the Heat Sink and CPU for long periods - it is possible there is a residual chemical left behind after it evaporates. I really cannot remember the technical reason AS gave in the pages of Application of AS :( But they did say it and THAT is why I have always done it that way :P

I asked around drug stores for "rubbing alcohol" and one chemist asked me to try asking for "surgical spirit" instead, and that's what I am using now for alcohol.

I don't know about acetone though. The only source of acetone I have is a cheap bottle of nail polish remover and it does zilch on the thermal goo.Does going to higher quality nail polish removers, say lakme or something, help?
