Guys.

What is the maximum distance up to which ADSL connection is possible [over copper cables] ?

I am taking a 256 kbps line and am probably 5-6 km from the nearest Telephone Exchange.

OMG 5-6KMs? Your service providers must be using very good quality of UG cables. In Arunachal Pradesh, Itanagar, we get hardly only upto 2KMs of wire distance. They say this is the limit.

Check the SNR values before getting the connection...it should be greater than 18db..otherwise you will observe frequent disconnects in your adsl line...

yes it depends on snr value which shows the strength of quality between you can exchange.

@Samkong
I am "asking" if it works that far. I am not telling that it works!

What's the maximum distance you guys have seen/heard personally?

@Gaurish
Actually I don't even have a "regular" landline. Didn't need it till now.
Am only getting the landline to use internet. If that's not possible at my distance then I'm doomed and the landline is wasted.

Check with your neighbours who have broadband, that would be a better! ;)

Sometimes they are good and sometimes bad, some people face frequent disconnection , so best ask your neighbour about the broadband they are using

To find out. Contact your ISP. tell them your Location and ask if they would provide service there. If "yes" then get a connection, else drop the idea

Simple!;)

When you call customer care, they will take your address & send a guy to your home. That guy will check out distance b/w your home & nearest switching station. If its in range then they give connection or they say connection full. (e.g. Airtel)

@ajay387 None of the neighbors are on Broadband as such.

@Gaurish Yeah. I think that would do it. But the thing is the Telecom guys here told me that it wont work. And I am sure as hell that they haven't "tested" it, as they were not sure.

Maybe I have to show some consumer strength.

The accepted distance is less than 1.5 km from the nearest exchange. More than that leads to an unacceptable level of frequent disconnection issue.

Also depending on who is your service provider, you would get various reasons on why it is not possible to give you a connection. Non-serviceability is not only related to the distance between exchange and your place, it can also mean that the ports are full in the DSLAM.

Then probably you should look for other options from Other ISPs in your area, perhaps wireless?

if you still want try DSL route, apply for connection and then before installing it would checked. But I won't advise that because you are wasting for your time as they already said it won't work. why bother, look at other options
