Storage Solutions How is Western Digital 250 GB SATA-II (with 16MB buffer)

After few days of searching in Nehru Place, my hardware dealer was unable to find Seagate 250GB SATA-II hardisk (7200.10 with 16 MB buffer), so he got Western Digital 250GB SATA-II (with 16 MB buffer).

I just wanted to check whether this Western Digital harddisk is performance wise good...

I think the model no is WD2500KS
 
Think the Hitachi T7k250 would be a better buy ... been using one myself :)

I would say HITACHI but few days ago I heard that HITACHI is little slower.
Now I am confused too. So, I will stick with my old Girl-Friend, SEAGATE.

also NOTE: those USA based REVIEW-SITES uses totally different model of HDD than that comes to India, even though they are of same size and buffer.

That is for the T7k500 vs 7200.10 320gb drives, there too the difference is only 2-3 mbps :)
 
I am using WD 320GB 16mb buffer. runs flawlessly!! its really nice drive. Boots up windows 50% faster then my old 80gig pata.
 
Hey, my dealer has already brought the WD drive so i think i can live with it.

My whole system will arrive 2day or 2morrow.

I'll try my hand in assembling my new system on the weekend

But i have to live with my old Samsung 15inch CRT (:()for some time before i buy a 19-20 inch LCD one.

Old story... 7200.10 250GB is way way faster than the 7200.9 and looking at those benches way faster than the hitachi too.

@monty: WD only has 3 year warranty on desktop drives. You okay with that?

I think the 7200.9, 7200.10 version naming convention is being followed by seagate only. So, is WD WD2500KS 7200.10?

Since, the dealer is known one (he is taking all the pains for me and getting selective components from Nehru Place:hap2:) and is near my house, so i don't think warranty should be a problem.
 
monty, 7200.x are the seagate models. Latest one is 7200.10 The hitachi models are tk250 and tk500. Don't know the WD model numbers.

What I meant was you'll get only 3 yrs warranty instead of 5 yrs that hitachi/seagate gives you.
 
I had the option of getting a WD hard drive with 16 MB buffer (250 GB) or Maxtor Diamondmax 10 16MB buffer for (250 GB)... The WD was cheaper by 5 Euros. However after having read the reviews of both the drives I went for Maxtor. I know most folks would disagree, but I'd say to them dont generalize Diamondmax 10 with other Maxtor drives and read some reviews of the same. The Maxtor drive also supports NCQ which was a factor for me as well, plus it has a lower noise level.
BTW there is not much difference betweena 16 MB buffer drive or an 8 MB, however 16 MB drives do require less CPU. Having said that they differ just by 300-500 Rs, so you might as well go for the 16MB drive.

Ya ya bro i was clear abt ur reply. I think i can manage with a 3 year warranty as well
 
Anyone know of a site that lists the quietest drives? I would really love a drive that is both fast and quiet. It'd be great to put four of them in a RAID setup for performance :).
 
WD external drives haev 3 year warranty . the internal HDD's have a 5 year warranty.

And the warranty is an onsite warranty - so the lazy ones can get it replaced sitting at home :)

the performance of my 250gb Wd is pretty good- no bench marked results though
 
^^LOL thats being compared to a 7200.7 which used to average arnd 48MB/s in read speeds. The newer 7200.10 drives average 68MB/s :P. There's simply no comparison :bleh:

@Draz: Only the raptors and RE edition caviars are 5 years warranty. The rest of the OEM drives are 3 years. Here straight from their site...

Western Digital Hard Drives (not purchased as part of a retail hard drive kit)

EIDE hard drives carry a limited Warranty Period of one (1) year. WD Caviar, WD Caviar SE, and WD Caviar SE16 hard drives carry a Standard Warranty Period of three (3) years. WD Raptor, WD RE2 and WD RE hard drives carry a Standard Warranty Period of five (5) years. Western Digital Mobile and External Hard Drives carry a Standard Warranty Period of 1 year.
