Of the remaining 50%, 20% will be from Ivys and top US/UK colleges, another 20% from DCE/BITS/Stephens/Personal Contacts etc.

Less than 10% of the people will be from a regular college including NITs, Manipal, Jaypee, VIT or lower and they still made it here and perhaps after a much longer period of time.

Just out of curiosity, which college do you go to?

Besides the point, I am not stating who is going to a good college and who isn't, but I am just saying that without a good college you are doomed in a job.

BTW I am in second year of Bachelor of Business Studies of Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies (Delhi University) - Rated Asia's No.2 Undergrad management college after NUS BBA. And alongside I have my own startup which gets me an income of nearly 1 lac INR month (profit as income).

And I plan to go to a top UK/Aus/US college for MBA(if I do one) and also expand my business as well.

And just FYI, our placements have been 5.5 lacs CTC or above since 2009 and even in 2010. In 2008 they were around 4.4 lacs (still higher than DCE back then, now of course DTU has 7.2)

1. I would any day prefer being from an IIT.

2. My college is still in the same league as top colleges of India apart from IITs like St Stephens, SRCC (in terms of package mine is better than both, and still a DU college), although slightly lower than both (overall).

3. I am gunning for a Top 50 World MBA college as a back up.

4. My main aim isn't a job. Education is just a back up for me.

5. I am not saying that my qualifications are the best you can get. But I am saying that if you don't get at least this much, your growth in a job with be really slow and tough, if at all.

When you are good at your work, money will definitely come!

And by your standard, how many IITians get more than Rs. 50 crore per year? Does that mean that next thing you will tell him to become Suresh Kalmadi?

I mean, even before the lad has given the entrance examination, you are telling him to think about his salary when he completes 15 years in his field!

I was within the top 20 in JEE, but didn't join IIT coz I wanted to be with my GF. Took admission in her college
But still, today I am working with the best people in my field. And my scholarship is more than some of the figures that you have pointed out (ya, I am still studying for an advanced degree).

First decide the subject that you truly enjoy. A subject should decide the institution, not the other way round.
Next, try your level best to get into a reputed institution.
Doesn't matter which institute you join, enjoy your college life (the best years!) and develop a real good understanding of your subject.
Rest all will automatically fall into place.
All such institution comparisons are useless unless you have your result in hand.
