me too thinking of not using my main rig for browsing&d/l purposes,so planning to buy one sempron&one asus nvidia based mobo...:)

its worth it , i mean i've basically developed the need for the pc specs based on what im gonna run on it. I have a e2140, which i tweak to run @ stock and @ 2.4ghz as and when needed. Even with multiple VM's and the little bit of gaming i do, I havent seen the processor doing 100% cpu usage. I have a 8600gt as well , which I 'remove' off my system during weekdays and it gets into my system only on weekends when I want to game. Now that my download speeds are way faster (700mb in 30-40mins, i dont seem to bother too much).

For more power saving im on a DIY mod (power switch mod) where I would even switch off the hard drives! to save -

1) hard drive life
2) whatever power the harddrive would consume

also if u have more than 1 hdd and ur downloading and doing nothing the other hdd is like uselessly running simply at all.

Just boot the atom via Ubuntu (directly from cd)

Snap in a 8gig/16gig pen drive and use http://www.linuxlinks.com/portal/content/reviews/converting/Screenshots/Screenshot-KTorrent.png

Is that 'remove' as in physically or there is a way to just turn it off so it wont consume power?
Sorry for the purely academic noob question. Never even held a gfx card in my hand and have no wish to.

You can't turn it off.. I think thetechmind removes it physically from his system and installs it when necessary..

I myself have a E2180 with palit mobo as my main rig...p4 2.66 with intel mobo as brwosing rig but i feel my p4 which i use mainly would consume more power than my E2180 even though its dual core...

So am planning to replace it with sempron 140 with asus mobo...is this worth the investment since i can make it run at stock speed when am palying hd movies,or even playing some old games which is not the case with atom...

Also semrpon based on K10.5 architecture is tweaked for lower power consumption...:)

well my p4 2.6ghz HT ,with 2hdds,2 rams,fx5200 with monitor OFF consumes 87watts* while idling & downloading and 155watts* when gaming.

*includes the power consumption of UPS.
