Hi all, I have a laptop(2 months) and need to know how to maintain the battery. I have heared that one should drain out the battery (not use the mains, running the laptop on battery) once every week in order to keep it up and running. Is it true? If so how frquently should it be drained out? Also I would like to know if there are other techniques to elongate the lifetime of a laptop battery.

Re: Laptop battery

If you going to use it via the mains remove the battery and keep it aside, use it only when needed.I have been doing the same with my laptop and my battery is still doing good :).

Re: Laptop battery

Firstly, if you plan to keep the laptop connected on AC power for quite some time, remove the battery.

Secondly, ensure that you do not overcharge/completely discharge the battery unwantedly. When it reaches 10~15%, start charging, when it reaches 90~100%, remove AC adaptor.

Does that mean that a laptop should usually be used on battery, and when its charge goes down to 15% to 20%, it should be connected and used with mains to charge it back to 100%? Is this charging (to 100%) and discharging (to 20%) considered the way that a laptop should be used? What I do is this- "I use the laptop on mains even when the battery is charged 100%, and once a week I discharge it to 20% and as soon as that happens, recharge it back to 100%, and continue using the mains even if the battery is not removed. How should I use my laptop in that case, because I do not want to remove the battery at all.

Re: Laptop battery

Just set it to start charging at 40% and stop at 90%

Then, when you are using on mains, the charging will stop at 90%, and the laptop will run on adaptor

When you use the battery a little bit, and connect the adaptor back, battery charging will not start.

Only when you have used the laptop w/o the adaptor for a while(charge < 40%), the charging will start

Do not do what you are doing. It will reduce the life of the battery. I now get only 20 ~30 min of backup power from my battery, albeit it is 3.5 yrs old. I always keep it connected to the mains, use it as a download rig, 24x7. If you plan to use the laptop for an extended period of time, remove the battery and keep it connected to the mains.

And yes, when it reaches 15~20% start charging, and when it reaches 90~100%, remove adapter.

Why are you saying to remove adaptor?

Modern laptops dont overcharge batteries

Just set charging cutoff to 80% or so

If I set these parameters i guess i wont have to worry about overcharging or discharging, and can keep the AC adapter connected all the time?

For me it's in thinkvantage power manager, should be in the battery management software that came with your laptop

You will still lose a little bit of battery life (due to heating of the battery by the laptop), but otherwise should not be an issue.

Battery life depends a LOT on the battery OEM, people who got Sanyo batteries had to replace them in 300-350cycles/2yrs, those with Panasonic batteries lasted 1000+cycles/3years in my college

Re: Laptop battery

Mine is Lenovo Z570 ideapad, but i cannot find any power management software on the CD. Where do I get the power management software from? Any links?

I found the 'Energy Management' software from the CD. I have installed it but on running the program a window showing 'battery gauge' appears which asks to keep the laptop on the adapter and the process continues for a long time ( its still is at this moment ). But what do i do further?

Yeah modern laptop chargers don't feed your Laptop more than the set level.. So use charger with your desired maximum charge level..
