I study in a college where there is a wi-fi hotspot provided by the college.

The college provides all the students laptops.
I have a suspicion that the college authorities write down the MAC addresses of all the laptops and maintains a database of the students along with the addresses of the laptops that were provided to them.

I dont want the college authorities to know which site I am visiting.

Services like Tor protect users from the external network.

I want to know if there is some service where the proxy server present in college will not be able to correctly determine which site I am visiting.

simple: if u dont want them to track use a different internet gateway i.e ur own way, via usb or something, avoiding the gateway tracker is not possible no matter what u do as long as ur connected to the network and use their gateway\

@sato1986 : that wouldnt help really! for example if they are using ISA server, its going to track every damm thing including time / sites / duration etc.

Use a proxy to browse the websites. There is also something called ultrasurf which can be used. It will assign you a dif ferent IP (a USA one) and then you can surf. I use it (when it works) to access blocked sites like youtube etc from my home.

Not sure whether this will help in your case ??

I saw this yesterday : Free Virtual Private Network Secures Data on the Go

Can it be of any help in my case??

I plan on using the free version.

^^ Thats what ultrasurf is..free VPN. another is Hotspot shield.

If interested in pay option then you have Witopia

Another option is to use XbBrowser.

get more details here

https://xerobank.com/download/xb-browser/

Pro-

no ads
no spam
can disable javascripts ..
stealth ...unlike other proxy softwares.. it doesnt has any icons in sys tray...or anything like that ..
this uses tor addon for firefox

cons..

very slow ..

i tried hotspot shield .looks good...bt can it be tracked down ??

try ultrasurf / ghostsurf / xb-browser / freenet / tor addon (firefox) / or use tor itself

p.s-and dont forget to change ur dns server to a free public one.

i assume u are connected via dhcp
(as the college authorities mostly have their own proxy/firewall server to block/track unauthorized usage)

Now playing: Aerosmith - Avant Garden
via FoxyTunes

I use a site called shadowsurf dot com to lurk around chinese defense sites. Some sites can detect if your using a proxy and block you.

Almost all the proxy sites are blocked by Websense :( how do u manage to use it at work?

Damn those admins ! :bleh:
Well, only restriction WAS :ohyeah: on downloading and installing stuff.

We even fear using proxy sites in office. Because every denial of any website accessed is being recorded by the central system and it also counts number of attempts made to particular websites.

A guy here was called by HR for attempting to open youku (popular chinese video sharing website which is blocked) more than 5000 times :O

See the determination. Must have thought that web sense may allow him once at least :P

What difference is there between China & India in this respect ?
