Linux How to get back GUI in OpenSuse 10.2?

Ran Sax2 and was successful in getting the GUI back. But alas, no text was visible... mouse was moving but i wasn't able to do anything.

Then i just got the LFY January issue along with the OpenSuse 10.2 DVD and reinstalled OpenSuse and voila i am posting this message from within OpenSuse 10.2 with both GNome and KDE installed.

I think previously when i installed from CDs some CDs were corrupt...

Now, i'll try running the 3D desktop...

Wish me luck!

Got the 3D Desktop by doing the following:

1) Installed the Intel Graphics Drivers from the Intel website.

2) Then, followed simple steps to enable Xgl from here:

Novell Documentation

Rebooted the PC, and the login screen looked washed out... with no text visible. I was able to click the menus and buttons at the login screen but no text was visible. Succeeded in logging-in and got a washed out desktop again with no text visible.

Then i pressed "Ctrl+Alt+→", and viola it showed the 3D cube spinning...

Then i pressed Ctrl+Alt+F1 and got to the shell. Modified /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager file and changed DISPLAYMANAGER_XSERVER value to "Xorg" from "Xgl". Rebooted and got my original desktop back (thank god!).

Now, the problem:

"Why is the display washed out and nothing is visible when i enable Xgl"?

Do, i need to do something else?

seems to be a driver problem... a frnd of mine with my same config had the same problem... He missed out something in compiling the driver with the parameters!!

try compiling the source from the intel open-source drivers!

Hey sunbiz, can u give me the direct link to intel open-source drivers for my DG965RY which i need to build? and was ur friend's problem solved? If yes, then u can give me the exact parameters i need to give.

BTW, i also tried Beryl with Xgl but got the same problem with it.

Wow:hap2::hap2::hap2::hap2::hap2::hap2::hap2::hap2:

At last my efforts paid off and i was able to run the full 3D OpenSuse 10.2 Desktop.

Here are two screens:

Thanks to Sunbiz, Kingkrool, psynaps3 and chezy:clap::clap::clap:

I downloaded the latest Mesa drivers from Intel's site mentioned in my last post, built them and voila...

One query, i was able to find "Desktop Effects" settings only in GNome. Where can i find it in KDE?
