Hi,

I've got a pretty old Toshiba lappy from a friend who had discarded it.

The only prob seems to be with the laptop HDD, can we get only a new HDD to replace this, I need only the HDD (dont want to pay for the outer USB casing and stuff which comes with an external HDD).

Any idea what I must searching for (any particualt specs, dimensions and stuff or are all these the same)? The current HDD is a 40GB toshiba HDD2171.

TIA

What you need is a 2.5" Laptop HDD.
I remember buying a Seagate 40gig (5400rpm) hdd for 2.5K(Ritchie street,Chennai) to replace a Toshiba hdd that conked out(old HP notebook).

Get the new hdd, remove the hdd compartment/bay from the notebook, replace old hdd with new and slide it back in place.

Up and running in no time !

You can get ones from Seagate,Samsung or WD,of these only WD makes 250 GB ad 320 GB IDE HDDs. For WD contact Amarbir (Lynx) for Seagate/ Samsung contact Rahul (theitwares)

Go to repair4laptop.org you might get specific instructions on changing the HDD for your model.

[strike]I came across a 160GB "WD1600BEVT" was wondering if this would work with my Tecra s1?[/strike]

Ok scratch that, I guess it is a SATA HDD that will not work with the Tecra S1.

Think this WD will work though, could anyone confirm my understanding

WD Scorpio blue will work fine. PM me if youre buying, im also looking for the 250 or 320 GB one for my old laptop.

I am searching for a 320 GB PATA HDD but unable to find one. The maximum capacity is 160 and that too costs 3.2k.

Any suggestions welcome.

320 GB is available. Amarbir of Lynx agreed to order one for me if i wanted, Thetechshopguy in the market section also has it but his prices are ~ 400 more than Amarbir.

BTW, 250 GB version is selling for 4140 + shipping.

EDIT : Here are the exact prices from techshop guy (IMO a bit on the higher side)
Scorpio Blue 250GB 5400RPM PATA WD2500BEVE Laptop Hard Drive 4494/- + Shipping
Scorpio Blue 5400RPM 320GB PATA WD3200BEVE Laptop Hard Drive 5122/- + Shipping
