actually, there's a simple solution to your problems.
you shouldn't waste the decoding prowess of the 8600GT.

PowerDVD actually does play x264 .mkv files, you just need to rename the file extension from .mkv to .avi to "trick" PowerDVD to play it. and wala! you now have hardware accelerated h264 playback using PowerDVD and your 8600GT :)

btw, i used PowerDVD 7.3 to play the .mkv files under both vista x64 and x86, so make sure you have the latest version installed, to be on the safe side.

Really will give it a try.

6pack , i am using vista and i need a codec pack too.Are you sure vista codec packs are better than fddshow?? For i need to install one.

I came across a thread in another forum about this same problem I had in XP and the suggestion there worked for me - run Radlight Filter Manager and under "Direct Show filters" change the priorities of ffdshow video decoder to "merit_unlikely" and coreavc to "merit_preffered +1"

Free-Codecs.com :: Download RadLight Filter Manager 1.5 : RadLight Filter Manager allows you to change merit of DirectShow filters and it can also be used to list all registered codecs and to register or unregister codecs
