Guys i need to kaput a HDD that contain data which is mine and i want that DATA or HDD to be kaput so that no engineer can repair it. It is in a dell comp and is under warranty and i want that the damage cant be traceable.

I pity on the poor guy which is gonna be on the receiving end of your deed. :| Remember What Goes Around Comes Around ... :|

1.Try attaching/removing HDD in live system:bleh:
2.Give high jerks to disk until its head damage/stuck inside:bleh:

Try all this.

Drop it on your bed from a height.

Remove the power connector when its running.

Use about 3 - 4 splitters and attach all your Hardware on that single molex which you use the splitters on.

Restart the pc when either windows is booting, Defragmenting, scanning HDD, copying data, booting in safe mode etc etc.

Sure Kaput.

+1. If its ur data, wats it doing on someone elses comp? :P

2. Why spoil someone elses/company system i guess since its a dell?

If you just want to erase data well, just use a secure shredding application. The very fact that your first reaction is to destroy the HDD is bad. + if you are afraid that the company will use an engineer to recover said data, implies that you did something wrong that you shouldn't have. No help should be given to you :P

Why don't you use a file shredder? The hardware will be intact and the data will be wiped out.

Remember this can get you into very serious trouble if there is an investigation and you're doing something ilegal. Forensic (and data recovery) experts can extract data even after multiple zeroes are written to the disk multiple times.

If you're just trying to make the data invisible, a quick format will ensure that it's hidden from every program except deep recovery software.

If you have something a little worse to hide, then you're on your own. There are ways, but I'm not telling.

Satisfy your soul by using comands like format c:, format d: will do job neatly :)

Soul not satisfied, attach it to another pc and do a low-level format !!

Still not satisfied, Drop the hdd from a height on carpet 4-5 times.

Caution: You may be charged for applying 3rd degree tortures to HDD :p

To all the person who think that i am culprit here:

I have been workin for a project since last year and a few months back i had an accident and i couldnt come to the office and i even told them about this and within a week of the accident i came to office even in the plaster on my leg. Now it has been 4+ months and i have not got a single penny from the firm i m working with. They think that i work for free and thats the reason i want all data and HDD crashed.
I hope this clear the air around.

I was thinking some thing like that. There must be reason for destroying hard drive.Thats why gave you suggestion not Lecture/Satsang like Astha channel baba's  I have further many more ways to kaput hard disk.

And with you damaging company property, forget about ever having getting any compensation, and if the company is a big org. say bye-bye to your career too.. because they do have a blacklist of people shared between the large orgn...

Reason out with the HR, leave out your immediate superior, if it doesnt work out. Go public with your ire, write too all major newspaper, post in all forums, blogs. The company must have spent years building reputation, they will reason wit you.

DO you think they have not backed up important information from your HDD in last 4 months then the company is administered by fools...

and as far as Monetary loss is concerned a HDD lost will not cost more than 3000 bucks for them It's a small money ....

So i suggest don't take risk of doing that ...

My suggestion is ----

Think Bigger...:2guns:

Don't shoot them but....

 :)

Well, they not paying you for your work doesnt imply that you destroy property. There are other means for you to express your opinions and voice them. As suggested in the above few posts, write to news papers, clarify things with their HR department etc. As far as getting your data unrecoverable from the HDD, the only way isnt to destroy the HDD. Use some good low level format tool or use a utility like kill disk.

Active@ KillDisk communicates with the system board Basic Input-Output Subsystem (BIOS) functions to access hardware directly. It uses Logical Block Addressing (LBA) access if necessary to clean FAT32 drives more than 8 Gb in size. To erase data it overwrites all addressable locations on the drive with zeros (FREE version). Active@ KillDisk Professional version suggests several methods for data destruction. For example, in US DoD 5220.22-M method it overwrites all addressable storage and indexing locations on the drive three times: with zeros (0x00), complement (0xFF) and random characters; and then verifies all writing procedures. This complies with the US DoD 5220.22-M security standard.

PS: I forgot to mention that if you are working for a good organization, they would have a backup of your work already with them. And besides, it would do you more good if you kept a backup of the work you did. Destroying your hard work? Whats the use?

For people suggesting resorting to nicer means and reason...I guess a big company would never hold your salary/compensation for the reasons mentioned like maintaining their reputation....It has to be a fairly small startup company or something like that who would do something like this.....still I would also not suggest damaging the hardware, instead use different ways of erasing data....also data recovery is a costly affair, so most probably your company would not do that....

@TS: I suppose that their behaviour entitles you to act like a criminal? Have you considered going to the police?

Look at the posts I quoted. That is sensible advice. I know people think we're like aastha channel or whatever, but there is something called right and wrong. You need to figure out for yourself what is right and what is wrong. People today are quickly losing their sense of ethics.

And I know that in all forums, you will have a mass of people who give senseless advice without considering the impact of the advice and their words. Recklessness and weak standards have become the order of our youth today. How many of you remember the discussion about our country and some foreign-returned brat's point of view? Do you want to stop thinking about your selfish means for even one second? Have you forgotten what it means to be a citizen. I suppose all this is of no consequence to you.

Yes, you've been wronged, but there are better ways to address it than damaging property. Learn the right way to do things. It's not easy, but if it was, everyone would do it.

And if you guys feel this is becoming a lecture-sabha, please let me know, I've been intruding in unethical and dangerous threads too many times now over the past few days. If I'm ruffling your feathers causing comments like 'baba channel' or whatever, I'll have you know that I've got better things to do than to cast pearls before swine. You know who I'm talking to, and what about.

Have a great day.

Ok i have found a solution to erase the data only that cant be recoverd and i have backed up the data. The system is public information toouchscreen and when it will shut down for 2-3 days the media in my small town will make some noise and when the admins will ask me then i will tell them abt the situation and see what happens. And i thank u all for the kind suggestions. I hope i act the right way.
