well i just bought a brand new national roti maker and i wanna know how to make rotis with it. i know how to make the dough but when i try to make it with the roti maker it either becomes crisp asa biscuit and you know the roti kinda goes haywire

so can someone with enuf experience with a roti maker tell me how to use it and also what kind of consistency should the dough be?

:ashamed:

^^^If the rotis are hard and "papad like" the only problem that I am aware is that the dough is dry. You need to add more water and make the dough soft.

That is the most common reason for hard "papad like" rotis.

@OP: Is that the only problem you are facing. Also you need to keep the dough ball towards the hinge so that when pressed it spreads towards the

remaining surface.

To be frank why you bought it is still a mystery to me.

When the product first hit on channel.I remembered zee tv was a new channel and they had their own asian sky shop(on line of telebrand)where it used to promote and show how wonderfull product it is.

My friends who were not from very sound economical strong family too bought this product. But all the hype and even the product died soon.

SOme were cursing the product to the extent that rotis were getting burned and all.

I guess like share market the cycle have changed.ANd again people buying the product.

Roti makers have an excellent use. You can make superb dosas without oil on them. I've tried making rotis using many of the suggested methods (including the one in which we are supposed to use a wet towel and slightly press the flat dough) but almost always they come out as papads. :P Forget rotis and make dosas.

Well, I bought one during my glorious days of bachelorhood :)

Initially I also used to get papads instead of rotis.

Later on my mom did some R&N and figured out that the dough needs to be much softer than what is used for regular stuff. Softer to the level that it will almost be sticky. You need to use dry flour to make a small ball and keep it in the maker. Dont press too hard. Thinner the roti, higher are the chances of it going dry. Also use it only when it is completely hot.

But honestly, it was too much of hassle for me. And for me most important issue was that the shape of my rotis used to be anything but round. So I switched to normal tava and used the roti maker to flatten the rotis into perfectly round shape.

Edit: By the way, they can very well be used to roast papads :)

Mohit

well i know how to make one using the tava but i thought it would be easier to make it using a roti maker :P guess i was wrong as most have suggested here the dough must be really soft and i guess its a trail and error method to get the proper fluffy rotis :P @logistopath how do you make dosas with roti maker :S
