Not impossible but takes lot of time. Can be done using gradients with varying opacity and blur effects, i guess . Correct me if i am wrong.

@ OP it is not a photoshop work, But a rendering from a 3d Modeling tool, which supports radiosity rendering...

Hardly 2 minute work in Autodesk Maya, 3D max and other 3d softwares.
[Though its not even full use of render.]
And a bit of work in photoshop + illustrator.

Only some touch up is done in Photoshop.Basic is in 3D software.There are also programs to create abstract wallpapers.

you can also create Abstract wallpapers in Photoshop you just need to download the preferred brush and install it in Photoshop. you also need some skills.

you can do 3d in Photoshop CS5 Extended (import/use tools) and recreate exactly the same image that you are looking for. I have license of only the normal edition, else I'd showed you.
