got my nv5 today
I cant remove the old heatsink I removed the 4 screws back of the card but the heatsink will not come off. how do I remove this? I want to fix my nv5.
6800 is outside booted system with old fx5700.
CARD IS BFG 6800 128MB heatsink with 2 fans exactly like this http://www.bfgtech.com/6800OC.html

Well most companies use some sort of goo or thermal pad on the core of the cards. That sticks to the hsf and it acts like adhasive. You need to pull and at the same time twist the HSF a bit and then it will come off. And mind you, sometimes you need to really pull it forcefully. I am guessing you have already removed the backplate and 4 screws on the back.

OK, try this.

From the bottom side after removing the 4 Screws, see if you missed any.

After removing all screws just jerk it around a bit, if it moves, you know ur close.

I really havent seen a BFg 6800OC, so i dunno the damned screw arrangement.

Can u post pics of the bottom and top?

yes the back plate and 4 screws are removed but I cant pull and twist the card. There are 4 rods that go through the 4 screw holes so there is no way I can twist the heatsink. I dont think there is a thermal pad on the core but all the memory on card have some heatsink pads on them.

hi funky, golden
I have removed the only 4 screws that were there. but it wont come off. let me see if I can get my camera working and post a pic
funky after removing the 4 screws there are 4 rods that hold the heatsink. these rods are connected to the heatsink itself and the 4 screws go over them.

chaos no it is not working :(
here is picture of it. I removed back plate and screws

see the 4 rods there? they are connected to heatsink.

pull it. thats the only way its gona come off. It does need large amount of force if there is the thermal pad on core which is high possibility.

there is no thermal pad on the core I can see it. but there are thermal pads on all the ram of card I think they are holding the heatsink must be glued.
I really tried using all my force to pull it without breaking it but no it wouldnt come off this is so irritating :@ :@ :@ strugling with this from 11am onwards today.

:sos: :sos: :sos:

the thermal pad used on the ram is thick. On the core they use very thin pad. even my gigabyte 6600GT. and even if its something like AS5 it really sticks. AS5 is one of the stickest thermal compounds out there.

Dont worry, companies dont use thermal epoxy on 6800s. None i have ever seen and i have gone through 3 6800 series cards. It does feel like its glued but thats what happens to it over time.

If its not comming off anyway then do this. place a piece of clots on the pcb. take a buttr knief or spoon. slide it under the gab of heatsink while bottom of the knief resting on the cloth and not touching any SMC components and twist the knief.

themask
how will that help? screws are only on the back :S

funky
yar kya karu? kuch samaj nahi aaa raha what to do? should I pull it some more?

use the butter knief. Put the clots on pcb, slide the knief under the heatsink resting on the clots and either twist it or do what i am trying to show in the pic :P

1) What are those 5 white circular holes / sockets for on ur card ??
are they in anyway connected to the heatsink ??
have you tried to remove the cover of the heatsink from the front of the card.??(there must be small screws )

also if possible post a closeup pic of the heatsink , sideways view, i.e. the gap between the pcb and the heatsink should be visible.
2) stress your card by playing some heavyduty games for about 15 to 20 minutes.
let the core temp rise as much as you are comfortable with.
then shutdown the pc and immediately remove the graphic card and try to remove the heatsink.
heat partially melts / softens the thermal compound and loosens the thermal tape which is over the rams.

3)if this does not work then i suggest get professional help. forcing the h/s off with too much force can damage the fragile core or one of the smd resistors/ capacitors (if using knife etc....) rendering the card useless.
hence whatever you do i suggest you do it slowly (as suggested by funky) and do not apply too much force in frustration.!!!!!afterall its ur costly card and ur money.

those 5 holes are there on standard 6800PCB. Meant for holding the memory sinks.

Pressing on the core can damage the core, lifting it up wont.

As far as damaging the smd components, thats why i told to put a cloth between knief and PCB. And trust me it does need more force that we imagine it will need. I myself was sceared to death while i removed my 6800GT heatsink. It made a cracking sound while it came off. That was the noise of thermal compound bond breaking not the card damage.

And ya do it slowly. it will come loose at certain pressure. My knief almost bent 3/4 way while removin the HSF off the 6600GT. Thats how much pressure it needs sometimes.
