I have a 4GB Pen drive and I wish to install Linux on it so that I can use it any where. Which will be best for that? I currently use Linux Mint 4.0 at home.

I should be able to make persistent image with it, meaning I should be able to save my settings.

There should be profiles so that if I need to use it on the same computer again and again, it should not search for the right drivers every time.

Should run on computers with 256 MB ram. Computers in my college have just that much.

My old desktop is a celeron 466 Mhz and has 10 GB space and 256 MB SD RAM. I've been running it on Puppy Linux for sometime now and the results are rather encouraging. the puppy CD is about 80 MB big. I have to use the CD if i need to run it. in case you'd like to keep the CD tray free and run it frm a pen drive (not recomended though since according to some ppl, this is the best way to ruin a pen drive. and so i think it'd be better to get a low capacity cheap pen drive to use) then just extract the .iso puppy file to the pendrive using winrar and in you computer, set the boot option to boot first from the pen drive.

on second thought, since the entire of puppy linux gets loaded to the RAM and runs very smoothly frm there, you should be able to remove the CD once the puppy has finished starting. try puppy and see if it works to your liking.

cheers!

@Pause: I have already managed to install Knoppix on my Pen drive. I have heard that it ruins the Pen drive but I doubt that. Even if I remove the Pendrive it keeps running, meaning it runs completely of RAM. On systems with less RAM, we have the option of making a temporary swap partion on the Hard disk, so again the Pen drive is not abused.

Moreover, my Pendrive has 2 years warranty. I can always claim the warranty if something happens.

best linux i found for pendrive is SLAX

takes around 500mb on usb and has all programs needed to play movies and music and the regular stuff.

I go to my friends house and he has a password. I punch in my usb and boot slax and walla I'm online downloading with his 2mbps connection :)
