CPU/Mobo How to use DDR3 1600 on my motherboard?

My setup:

Amd phenom x3 720 on Biostar TA790GX A3+ mobo.

As per the manual and biostar link, the mobo supports 1600mhz ram speed only upon OC.

Now what does that exactly mean? Do i need to OC the whole setup or just the rams?

Also, in bios Memory clock value can be set manually to-- 1333/1066/800 and also 1600.

So can i use that value and go further without OCing either the whole setup or the rams?

Go to the BIOS and manually set to 1600 Mhz. Should work fine. However, you must ensure that the CPU is either not directly synced to it (like in SB) or it uses the right divider to work at stock, or with some OC if you want that.

Also, you may need to set the correct RAM related voltages but usually Auto should do the trick

Manually setting the Ram to 1600Mhz through the bios will do the trick. And keep the voltages on Auto and run Memtest86. If it passes then you are good to go and if errors pop up then manually setting he voltages will help. Increase the voltage one by one and check with memtest, once memtest passes successfully then DO NOT increase the voltage any furtherRremember that Ram is not to be exposed to higher voltages, most are rated upto a max of 1.65v so be careful. You will be able to attain stability much before the maximum voltage limit. all the best
