For connecting using UMG 1831, you need to have a GSM SIM from any provider (Airtel/Vodafone/BSNL etc..) . UMG 1831, will have its own T-Mobile software using which you need to set the profile (APN detail etc..) depending on the service provider. If you don't like the inbuilt T-Mobiles software you can also use Mobile Partner software (search internet). How to connect with UMG 1831 ?
both are cdma 1x modems. if reliance is mg880, not mg880+, you can unlock it.. same for tata sungil scx 1080. but 1x speed is pathetic. (156.6 kbps max).

And have you installed the drivers for umg 1831 ?
Since the light is glowing looks like the modem is in working condition. When you attach UMG 1831 to you laptop it should mount an readonly USB drive which will have the drivers, did you check if any USB/CD drive is shown once the modem is connected?Green light is glowing(coming-going).
I had drivers on my old lappy, formatted it.
Now what to do ?

Alternatively search/download "Mobile Partner -Huawei" from internet (that will have the necessary drivers) and has a better interface then the T-mobile software which used to be bundled with umg1831
Yes mobile partner will work fine. I used it with my umg 1831.
I might also have the original t-mobile sfw somewhere, if mobile partner doesn't work I can search for it.
UMG 1831 won't be creating a hotspot, for that you have to try software like connectify, which creates hotspot using your laptop wifi and then share your modem network with it, otherwise you have to get those mode routers/ or pocket wireless router.?[DOUBLEPOST=1364585883][/DOUBLEPOST]
Thanks. What I intend to do is get a 3G sim, insert in UMG1831, mount on to Lappy, Create a hotspot on Lappy & share Wifi connection with 2-3 other devices.
Will this work for such a setup ? Or will I have to get a Wifi modem with USB attachment feature ?
Also will UMG be plug & play or one has to dial each & every time ?

There will be a feature in the Mobile Partner software to connect automatically, if you are using win8 (and probably win 7) the OS has an inbuilt dialer which allows you to dial automatically when connected.
