So, I have been struggling for over two weeks in trying to decide over the Desire and the GalaxyS. I have been pouring over the net for reviews and this is what I have:

[attachment=6361:11713.attach]

All this info is from places like trustedreviews, engadget, gsmarena, cnet, techradar, fonearena, TE etc. I, personally have not seen any of these devices in person (but I can gauge the build of Desire because my friend has the Nexus One). So, if this helps any person out - you're welcome! :)

As for me, I am going with Desire. I really would be pissed if I had a buggy OS skin.

How much is the RAM for HTC Desire?

The Nexus One is an Excellent Phone, it has 512MB ROM and 512MB RAM which makes it smooth for operation.

I have the HTC Touch Diamond P3490 (Airtel model) which I have done a HardSPL and Flashed it with a Feature loaded ROM.

Remember Most of the HTC Phones can be HardSPL ed and Loaded with Custom cooked ROMs.

You can sacrifice some of the storage to get a lag fix on the Galaxy S, its irritating but this is an option in case you want to get the Galaxy S. TouchWiz is bad but you can always install Launcher Pro / Beautiful Widgets and change the look of your phone.

Galaxy S also some some issues providing accurate GPS data in case you are planning to use the GPS.

P.S. - I don't own either of these phone but have been reading about them all over the net.

Never encountered bugs with TouchWiz on Galaxy S. Its actually pretty good and adds quite a few niceties. I know people say that Galaxy S copied the iPhone UI. But that iPhone similarity is such a minuscule part of TouchWiz and it offers so much more that I would rather say that this is what iPhone UI should have been like. In any case you can always install alternative homes like Launcher Pro if you don't want to use Touch Wiz. Launcher Pro is in any case better than any custom android home.

As for Flash support, both phones have Flash Lite even without the Froyo update.

@ harishgayatri

The GalaxyS has 512mb of RAM. The desire has 576mb. Also, I forgot to add - the GalaxyS has a front facing camera for video calling (whenever that comes in India! :P)

As far as LauncherPro goes, won't that void the warranty of the phone? I wouldn't be too keen on losing the warranty for such an expensive phone.

^^ LOL... Are you nuts? Why the heck would you loose warranty for installing an app from the Android market? I hope you are not under the assumption that you need to hack the phone to install launcher pro? If that is the case then you thought wrong. Launcher Pro is an app just like any other on the market. The difference is that Laucher Pro is a special kind of app that acts as your home replacement. Once you install it, you get to choose between TwLauncher (TouchWiz) and Launcher Pro. You can can run one or the other as the default and switch between either of of them anytime you want. You can also uninstall Launcher Pro any time.

Oh, I did know about that. I was under the impression that LauncherPro was a custom skin like Sense or TouchWiz! I do remember something on these lines being mentioned on an engadget podcast. Ah well...

In any case, I shot the gun yesterday on the Desire. It should be on its way from flipkart right now!

With latest firmware available in India through Kies, the lag is more or less gone and battery life has improved.

Good choice with the Desire. Though honestly it's hard to say one phone is better than the other, and really it boils down to personally preference. Physical build quality + smooth and good looking UI won it for me with the Desire.

Anyway, awesome table you have made - should be very useful for anyone on the fence. Though there are a couple of corrections - you should edit your table. Froyo is available for the Desire in India OTA (and therefore so is 720p video recording). But AFAIK the Galaxy S does not yet have this. So the Desire definitely gets the edge on this one.

Thanks! I should get Desire by day after tomorrow. I hope it arrives without any problems. I am kinda jumpy about this since this is my first time doing a e-purchase which was in 5 digits! *fingers crossed*

Yeah, I found that 2.2 was OTA later. On that (tangential) note, I wonder how many would even be aware that the Desire runs on Android (for starters my father would not know! :P) So, for most people (read - non-tech savvy), the Froyo update wouldn't even matter.

And yeah, Samsung is still non-committal about their Froyo release. Back in May, they said August. Then it became late September. Its a wait and watch for Galaxy owners. Still, I really doubt that Samsung will *not* do a Froyo release considering that Galaxy will remain the flagship Samsung device for the next 6-7 months. After that, this baby will rule the roost. Dual core 1 ghz! :O

The Orion will take till next fall to come to the market. For now IMO, the Galaxy S is a winner, Froyo is already out if you know where to look. Its coming out officially on the 23rd. The Desire has old hardware, with a bad GPU. If you really want to get a phone now, IMO, its between the Galaxy S, Desire Z or Desire HD.

^ Unfortunately HTC took their damn sweet time getting it to India, but I would hardly call it outdated. IMHO it performs as good if not better than the Galaxy S (as far as phone usage goes). Now I don't give two s**ts about fps while playing games on my phone. So far whatever games I have tried, I have had zero problems, and generally with the phone I have no lag whatsoever, which is not something I can say about the Galaxy S (though I understand a subsequent firmware update has improved things).

As for Desire HD and Z, they are not available in the market yet (they come out in october?). And they definitely won't be available in India officially anytime soon. My guess would be 2011. Now with any tech product, the rule is that as soon as you buy it, a newer better model is launched :P So if you can't accept that, then you can never be happy with any product.

Don't worry - I had an awesome experience with flipkart. The phone was packed very well, and best of all it was at my house in almost exactly 24 hours (from Bangalore to Delhi) from when I placed the order!!

The rubbish job that HTC has done over advertising and marketing it's premium phones (HD2, Desire etc), I seriously doubt that there would be anyone buying the phone who doesn't know the A to Z about the phone already (like us at TE :bleh:) I am pretty sure that however many Desires would be sold in India, 95% of them would be updated to froyo within 24 hours of their purchase! :ohyeah:

The thing is, when Gingerbread comes out, rumors are that it will use GPU acceleration. So in that case, the Desire will lag behind. Not to mention, the Desire's chip is based on old architecture, 65nm, so the new phones' battery life and overall performance will be better as well.

And yes, many people play games, so in that the GPU counts as well, not to mention when watching videos as well. Desire HD and Desire Z can be gotten via importing, or grey market. If you really want to wait for the official phone to release, then you're going to stay behind. Not to mention, the new Sense features that comes out with the new phones as well.

its not worth to go for desire when everyone we can buy desire hd within say 3 to 4 months max and what will be the resale value of old desire ummmm major point. unless u have nice green currency tree at home

Errr.... I never intended this to be a thread for phone bashing. There is no doubt that the GalaxyS is an awesome phone, but there is no denying that the Desire is brilliant as well. It's just that some of us prefer a better build quality and polish - this is something that the Galaxy S lacks. I personally am most probably going to buy another phone at the end of next year (will 'gift' the desire to mom! :ohyeah:)

As for the future, what will be will be... ;)

True.

Even I wasnt interested with the HTC when my Dad had it with him before as i never got to use it.

But when he stopped using it, i was able to play with the phone and I also found out how to flash it with Custom firmware which made me develop interest for the HTC Touch Diamond.

Hence I am recommending HTC Phones to people who can shell out money for it.

I really dont know about changing the firmwire for Samsung But there must be some way for it to be done.

A) The world we live in, before a product even hits the retail stores, the technology is outdated. So please, let's not get into that. Gingerbread is not coming out soon. And if we keep thinking about the latest technology, well the Desire HD, Galaxy S etc. will soon all be outdated by dual core processor based phones. There is no end to this.

B) Like I said, any game I have thrown at the Desire, it has performed beautifully. And I don't need to run Crysis on my phone. Mobile games are for time pass, and a little mental stimulation. For serious gaming, I have a sweet desktop and a ps3 with an awesome LCD. I would reserve my serious gaming for that. I don't need games running at 5 trillion fps on my phone.

By the time the Desire HD launches, I will bet all my money there will another brand new spanking phone on the horizon. If you keep waiting to buy the phone with the best technology.... well... you will keep waiting and never get a phone. As for resale value, maybe some people buy it with that in mind, but I do my research thoroughly and only buy phones I know that I am going to use for a looong time. I for one don't care about resale value. Though I can imagine people who want the latest phone every 2 months would.

Yea people who buy every 2 month should wait for desire hd and should not buy current desire. unless and untill have green currency tree and dont mind selling desire for say 18k or less after 4 month or so

^ Agreed. Also as and when the Desire HD becomes available I hope you will advise people then to not buy the Desire HD and wait for Desire HD2. :P
