Alright guys, its more Android time!

It takes the best of the features of the Diamond 2 and replaces WinMo 6.1 with Android! Thus making it a light, fast and immensely moddable device while keeping the useability of HTC's UI. HTC calls the new UI, "Sense".

It looks utterly gorgeous - slim, moulded and sexy. 7 homescreens, a 5MP camera, 3.5mm audio jack but no keyboard. This is the prettiest Android phone yet!

Excerpts from Endgadget here:
We're going to need some real time with the device to make a final opinion, but we're cautiously optimistic that HTC has a winner with its new Hero.

Here's what we've got from our first looks at the phone in London and NY:
- The beveled edges along the back makes the handset sit comfortably in the hand, and while the teflon coat doesn't necessarily feel revolutionary, it's going to make a world of difference after a couple of months riding in our grubby pockets. It's certainly solid, but much more so than other "brick" phones.
- The Sense UI (or as HTC terms it, "user experience") riding a capacitive touchscreen offers a people-centric approach to managing your information that is absolutely dreamy at first blush -- though it shares a lot of TouchFLO heritage. In fact, HTC promises to have a very similar Sense-branded experience for Windows Mobile.
- The on-screen keyboard also seems quite useable with a nice simulated haptic forced-feedback bounce when you strike each key in either landscape or portrait mode (which can naturally be deactivated). HTC has built its own touch keyboard from the ground up, and in our brief couple of tests we'd say it's probably the best touchscreen typing experience we've ever felt.

- It never lags behind, and has great colorful visual cues for its auto-corrected words -- green means it's suggesting a correctly spelled word, red means we've gone off the beaten path, and the T9-style multiple suggestions are heavenly.
This intuitive one-hander isn't shy with the specs either as we've already seen in the official press release. Our only concern is possible sluggishness from the Qualcomm processor that cause the graphic transitions to stutter a bit and results in screen rotations that feel dangerously uncomfortable.

- The Hero is not a "Google Experience" device. As such, you won't find the Google logo anywhere (no big deal) but you also won't be downloading any firmware updates over the air -- sideloading only kids. Not a deal breaker but an annoying and seemingly arbitrary limitation nonetheless.

- For a device without a physical keyboard, the Hero seems a little thick up against its HTC Magic, Nokia N97, and iPhone 3G counterparts, but not overly so.

No it isnt. THIS is the prettiest Android phone now:
geeksphoneone.jpg

Specs:
625MHz PXA310 core, quadband EDGE plus HSDPA, WiFi, Bluetooth, AGPS, 3.2 megapixel primary camera plus a front-facing cam for video calling, and microSD expansion

That is a real android phone and was launched yesterday. Specs of the Hero might be nice but the phone looks crap with that horrible chin.

Looks are subjective. :D

Also, the Hero has Teflon-coating which IMO is a damn cool feature - no frikkin' fingerprints on the phone! And an Oleophobic screen which makes it easier to wipe off fingerprints!

I have already run Hero on my G1 as there are a number of modded Hero Roms out, and has been for a month or more. This UI is beautiful and very well designed, it has 6 additional screens that you can switch between by just dragging left and right, it also has a very nice lock screen too. Unfortunately they are still working on a mod that the G1 can handle smoothly enough and I have found it a little clunky on the G1 up till now. This is changing as they have added some improvements whereby you can have all your apps run from the sd card freeing up more memory. Also they have taken some of the better features from the ION and Rogers ROM to help boost the spped of use on G1.

Of course if you buy the Hero phone, everything runs very smoothly as it was built for this phone and it has enough Horsepower to run this UI beautifully.

I want one :P

HTC Hero looks sexy!! But with the price G2 was launched in India for, its only going to get worse when (and if) this one comes here!!

Hero, palm pre and omnia HD look promising.....But will stick with iphone..............reason:app store.

Completely agree, that's the main reason I'm still sticking with it.

@thexfactor and smoky: The App store's biggest rival in the near future and time to come will be the OSS environment of AndroidMarket. :) That's the #1 reason I've bought the phone, its truly infinitely expandable!

I hope so.But have my doubts .Sure it will have great apps(much better than symbian junk) but i am also interested in mobile gaming.I doubt the quality of games on the android platform will be as good as those on the app store. But ya i do believe it has a lot of potential for growth and will undoubtedly become app store's biggest rival.

Anyway this is a step in the right direction by HTC.Always thought they made great phones(hardware wise) but they ruin it by putting crappy windows mobile OS.Hope they move away from the windows mobile platform and concentrate on making android phones.

Firstly the Android app store is getting rather large, here is a site that mirrors all the apps as a searchable database so you can have an idea. Cyrket - Android Market Browser

Secondly there are far more apps that are free by donation and very usable on the Android App store than on Apple.

Thirdly if you are able to root the phone you can run an unlimited amount of apps from the SD card :bleh: I probably have about 50 apps running off of an ext4 partition on my sd card that also has all the os's built in media files and data files on it to free up more space for hacks on the phone.

@Shripad If you need any help let me know, I also have a ton of Android related links I would be happy to send you.

LoL! You are very smart. Yes I am scared that Apple will go out of business because of Android. 3GS sales have proven how shitty iPhone is. Hey, wait Android has full 6% share of the smart-phone market and iPhone has just about what ? 49% ? You are right. iPhone's popularity is decreasing because of Android. :)

^^ @Pat, I hope u know I am just joking with you :) but....... considering that Android has only been on the Market since last November, I would say it's doing quite well at 6% :P

Ofcourse, but you got the joke wrong. I dont hate Android as such. I have already said its a geek's delight and would probably own it one day. But at the moment it is no match for the iPhone though it is capable to catching up pretty soon.
